I thought we could have a more general thread for chat about women's fashion that doesn't necessarily belong in the collection threads.

Post here about new arrivals you've seen, your vintage finds, stuff you're admiring, what you're into lately, etc.

I am marveling at how much Junya stuff Barneys (http://www.barneys.com/Women/women,default,sc.html?pagetype=designer&prefn1=designer&prefv1=Junya%20Watanabe%20Comme%20des%20Gar%C3%A7o ns) bought and wondering just who is going to be wearing all this techno gear. [woot]

Also wondering if anyone has seen pieces from Dries' grunge collection for Spring...

rider
02-07-2013, 09:10 AM
you mentioned two of the labels that i immediately honed in on for spring and even did a speedy lurch to get some things because i believe some will sell out quickly. dries especially this season has the rumbling of a big hit for him. i've seen it in person and the pieces in tartan are gorgeous, perhaps the best color palette he ever did. the ink blue, umber brown, alizarin crimson and ivory tops are my favorite, the ones fronted with plaid silver metallic integrate beautifully together and have sheer black bottoms or sleeves that you cant help but love. its about how the skin shows through the print. grunge is the new grail apparently because its selling very well, rightly so.

on a completely different front is what junya is doing with techno and its good, really good. have seen quite a bit of this popping up online [like you said, barneys went large] and some of it in person. buyers must have loved this because its apparent a lot of stores bought into it very heavily, and i have a feeling because of the steeper prices and the fact that there are so many common buys it could hang around for awhile. as far as the cuts, typical junya, they are super flattering when the waist is nipped in. some of the arm and shoulder treatments are bulgy in weird ways. the navy/silver combo is my favorite colorway although the black puma mesh parkas are sexy as hell on. some stores gladly have picked different pieces, not runway, but beautiful sheer knits that remind me of y's red. sheer accents must be my thing lately because between junya, comme and dries i chose tops all with sheer panels.

i think what dries and junya did this season is going to be very influential in mainstream fashion in the near future.

so not to be totally a collection review, i've got to mention that what i'm admiring lately are loose fitting trousers that slouch a bit on a womens frame.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the looks of this:

It looks much more appealing to me from shop images than it did on Rick's runway. I love the texture.

GlassOrganelle

^^ The shape and texture is lovely, I think in the runway presentation that was the only item that stood out to me.

I can't say I feel the same way about a lot of the other Rick pieces. This top and the sheer volumous fabrics don't really fit with the vision of Rick that I like.

The stuff that looks like mesh on the runway. Maybe organza is not technically correct, but it looked like it!

I actually didn't like those knits at all... I feel like it's vaguely emulatory of season's old Rodarte... even Helmut Lang's been producing similar warped and imperfect knits for a few years. Maybe I'm way off but at this point they feel so out of place to me.

I feel the same- I must preferred Ann's take on the open knit a few seasons back. Maybe it's the mix of colours I don't like.

I'm looking for new ideas of what to wear under long sheer jersey dresses. I recently bought a Silent one...they're nice to wear when it's warm but wearing leggings under them kinda defeats the purpose (staying cool), and I hate slips. Any brilliant strategies to prevent showing your undies to the world?

^oh I really love that Limi top, one of the best things in the collection, imo. [heart] I am also feeling really drawn to graphic prints and plaids, which Givenchy and Undercover have just reinforced for me.

I also see a Dries scarf, but what's that first thing you got?

Also, have you seen any of the Dries sheer plaid button-ups around? [smile]

rider
03-06-2013, 12:51 PM
i know that limi top is just so good... [heart][wub][thumbup] its killing me.
i am digging the chalayan iridescent's, reminds me of a paper show i went to years ago.
and i guess pinstripes will be abundantly represented next season with all the menswear themes, but i think rei's knotted waistcoats are my favorite.

dries is flying off the shelves this season, for good reason. i wanted badly to wait for sales but was fearful that most of what i desired wouldnt make it so i bit the bullet. even with an obvious lack of restraint [ninja], i think chose wisely; adding a plaid-backed/metallic-front shift, brown floral-front/burgundy plaid-back trousers (worn twice already, love these to death) and the small b/w checked sheer scarf to the dries section of the closet. he is my weak spot when it comes to paying retail. so all in all, 3 very different prints that represent what appealed to me most in the collection.

i tried a bunch of sheer plaid button up blouses on with you in mind and besides having a stiff, even slightly rough texture (silk but ever so slightly scratchy) they ran huge, so be cautioned if your tempted and find one online (which i can steer you towards) the sizing is wonky. i noticed that quite a few have been returned so i would say your best bet is to swing by IF and see what they stocked, fyi, the black/red/ivory combo is stunning as is the softer coral/lavender. remember the spaghetti strap day dress you tried last spring, i've seen that in a lovely flowy silk version that is so you!

different fabrication; the strutter habits are bias cut with some clever seamwork that would be pretty difficult to diy without any understanding of how bias performs.

the vicious one you posted looks like a retreading of the crust habits, which are just shaped with a dart running from the flat butt to the apex of the head.

i didn't take a good look at the vicious habits from the runway performance yet, but the moody habits are a third style entirely.

What would one do when they are seeking a fairly specific / potentially non-existent item they cannot find through existing channels?

I have a dream of a clutch/wallet hybrid that I cannot seem to discover manufactured by any of my preferred brands - or even other brands.

The closest thing I've found is the RO long flap clutch with the credit-card slots, but I'm extremely anal retentive and need more storage, card slots and a compartment for coins. It should be big enough to also hold my phone, keys, a lipstick, business-card holder and maybe some headphones.

I cannot handle the idea of all of these items loose and entangled within a single compartment pouch [wall]

Would one try to find an independent crafts-person to custom make something? Or simply do without? What are everyone's thoughts?

See maybe it's just me but I'd be concerned about the 'bagginess' around the upper thighs/lower bottom (back) and crotch (front) of those Isaac Sellam trousers. This was my problem area when finding a pair for myself... the RO pair I bought bunched up terribly around the crotch. Leather leggings IMO should really fit like a second skin.

I think it's ultimately an issue of body type vs cut...the model in the photo doesn't have much of a booty to contend with, so the pant sags in unflattering ways. A woman with a fuller/more curvaceous figure might fill these out well.

Ladies, do RO tank dresses stretch (70% viscose/15%cotton/15%nylon)? Or do you basically have to be curveless to wear them?

They do stretch and cling to the bust and hip. I have a few and usually buy mine two sizes bigger so they won't cling as much. They still do so though.

Let me rephrase that - do they stretch out with time (become bigger)? Sounds like a no if you have to size up two.

They do stretch out a bit over time, but not much. They certainly do not get baggy. I think my oldest Rick tank dress is from 08 or 09 and it is still fine.

I only size up because I do not like my clothes to be too tight in general. If a tight fit is what someone prefers I would go with your regular Rick size.

Way too tight from what I'm looking at right now ;-). Basically it seems like the ideal Rick lady has neither curves nor underwear. Kind of awesome, in a way...

That goes for most high end labels. Bras especially are something that seem to be banished from luxury designer land[tongue]
That first Rick tank dress I bought is - on top of being really tight - sheer as well. I tend to wear it with a seamless slipdress underneath. Seamless underthings in general go well with Rick.

edit: I just remembered that there is a cami tank dress in the Lillies line that is lovely as well.

hahaha yup

i was trying on a bunch of the tank dresses at the RO London store and thought to myself

"well, i could only wear this around the house..or at the beach. really looks best with no underwear on."

Ugh, so true. And so not an option for me not even when I was young.
Sigh. Someday I will figure out how to pair my style preferences with my genetics. Someday...

I'm really petite, but my solution has always been to wear a black convertible bra (the type with removable straps) and style it with a single strap across the body or connect multiple straps with the intention of it being visible. Sure, there's something really erotic about the general lack of undies that is missed out on, but...deliberately styled underpinnings have potential to work _with_ (rather than against) genetics.

I am sure you do it in an elegant way, but I must say that I find the recent fashion for showing off bras distasteful. Maybe 1% of women I see around NY get it right. Most of them veer into the vulgar/sloppy territory.

The convertible bra thing is a good idea and I bet you look awesome with what you do with it! But I am over 40 and it definitely changes what one can pull off, sadly...

I recently found an Ann D women's shirt in a thrift shop and decided to pick it up. I am curious about which collection it is from, but despite my best efforts I have not been able to find any reference to it online. Maybe someone here is able to recognize it?

Where is the cold weather so I can wear this mens Rick Owens blistered lamb coat? So excited and truly shocked by the chance I took that a men's would work but it did. It Did!!!! Love when that happens.

Does anyone know the best place to sell women's clothing/shoes/accessories that don't fit the ethos of SZ? Trying to sell a pair of Chanel boots that don't fit my girlfriend. Any help is appreciated! Is there another forum that I should know about or should I just go the ebay/consigner route?

Vestiaire Collective I have experienced both as a buyer and as a seller, and I can only recommend the experience. Very easy to use, and things move fast as long as you're not too greedy with your pricing.

Beware though, the content is curated, and some of your items may be rejected by the team, or they may ask for more pics. It is best to read their recommendations well before taking any pictures, so as not to waste time. It is also a good idea to use a proper camera, as I'm pretty sure some of my items were rejected due to the poor quality of the iPhone pics I used (my phone is the only camera I own)

However, Chanel boots in mint condition should be a breeze to get past them and sell (Chanel moves fast, except for vintage)

I second Vestaire Collective. I've not sold with them but have had good experiences. If the boots are not accepted for some reason, I'd recommend TheRealReal next. You'll get less cash than you would on Vestaire, but they'll do all the work. I have sold a fair bit of stuff there, since I'm too lazy to do the work.

one of my favorite Rick pieces in years. (https://www.net-a-porter.com/us/en/product/706535/rick_owens/naska-asymmetric-wool-and-linen-blend-jacket)
It takes on a much more sophisticated tone in charcoal lane wool/linen with ivory cotton lining.
I may have to actually get this one.

this noir kei was on my radar and finally found on sale. It's on it's way just in time for a frigid winter.

I wish a happy, healthy and prosperous new year to everyone.
