Very nice choices. I like that ivory CP bag with the big buckle. Very reasonably priced too. That seller is terrific--super nice guy, and a great selection of shoes. </p>

I&#39;m not a bag person at all, but i do need one....will be haunting this thread for suggestions.</p>

This was a cool Margiela bag on Yoox (sold out) - opens from both sides and can be used as a shoulder bag or a handbag. Too bad all your stuff would probably roll around like crazy if you were flipping it too often - but I like the idea.</p>

i actually just bought the margiela bag... large black one that faust posted. its my (anti)"status" bag.

also, i personally like the large money bag by tanner krolle. they had a limited edition one a while back which was metallic gunmetal. very beautiful.
i couldn't find a picture but if you go to tannerkrolle.com and click on money under the handbag section you can view it.

I like the red one with the change purse and the large black one. But perhaps the shopper that Faust posted would be more practical?</p>

Has anyone checked out the Margiela store for bags?</p>

Yes, it&#39;s back. I really like it, but it&#39;s very small....and quite expensive for being small, at that.</p>

Faust, what do you think about the Margiela shopper (the second pic from pollyanna)? I&#39;m total crap at picking out bags, [:(] and I really need one.

I think it&#39;s the shit! Expensive though. IF might have it, if you want to check it out in person, which I would suggest, since it might be too big (I remember you mentioned you have a pretty pettie frame).
</p>

Does it have to be black? Because I love this Collection Privee? on Yoox. I&#39;m not sure if it&#39;s good if you plan to use it for work (meaning the 8 1/2&quot; by 11&quot; mode).

I love this and the other CP bags you&#39;ve posted, but I really do need something black. My winter wardrobe demands it.</p>

I emailed Aloha Rag to get the dimensions of the Margiela bag. That would be a very big purchase for me, although it&#39;s not really that much considering most women&#39;s bags are well into the $1000&#39;s (and ugly too). </p>

Thanks for the input--I really must get down to IF!

Laika, I went to IF yesterday. They did not have those Margiela bags. The only Margiela bags in black they had were the huge duffels.</p>

They had one awesome tan bag, 3-D, rectangular, pretty big, with two-zippered flap closing the bag on top. It was like a slim box with a strap. I loved it. They did have many other beautiful bags. And many other beautiful things. They should have kleenex at the entrance, for whiping drool.</p>

Thanks Faust! Very sweet of you to check. That tan bag sounds really nice. Sigh. I am assuming that all IF&#39;s bags are extremely expensive? I&#39;ve never even bothered to check the prices...
</p>

So, the small version of the Margiela bag is about 12 X 14. I will probably stalk it a bit longer before I take the plunge, but it seems perfect.</p>

Goethe, how are you finding your bag?

Yea,
they are pretty expensive. :-( There has got to be
something in the middle, dammit!!! The only more or less good
bags with palatable prices I&#39;ve seen so far are Jas MB (and the
palatable prices are in the UK, because it&#39;s a London brand).
There has got to be more that we don&#39;t know about, dammit!</p>

I love the last one, I&#39;ve seen it in person.</p>

Stopped by the Margiela store, they had almost nothing as far as the bags. Apparenlty they do REALLY well. A second boutique is not out of the question, from what I was told. That&#39;s pretty incredible. Maybe people do really want just well-made clothes that are well made, well fitting, and just a tad interesting, as Johnny pointed out. I mean, everyone and their mother carries Margiela in NYC, and it does well.

Thanks for the report! That&#39;s good news about the Margiela store--at least something good is doing well here.
</p>

So, I went to Butter yesterday for the first time. They had a gorgeous Beguelin bag, among other things. I was very impressed with their entire inventory, but the prices!!!!! I was incredibly frustrated, because they had a number of items that would have been perfect for me, if I were able to justify $800 for a cardigan or $500 for a cotton blouse.</p>

Have you been there, Faust? Does it seem unusually expensive to you?

</p>

</p>

Sure, I&#39;ve been there. I bought my showpiece Ann boots there, and I gave them a very good client (a photo gallery owner and a big Ann admirer). It is a little more expensive than some other stores, but not by much. I like the store, and I am proud that something like that can grow in Brooklyn (pun intended). They don&#39;t have the economies of scale, I guess. I am actually constantly surprised by how little they are allowed to buy from the showrooms. They are opening a menswear store next season.</p>

Prices are insane everywhere. People have way too much money!!! I do like their inventory as well, they tend to buy different pieces than many other stores. BTW, did they tell you about the outlet? It&#39;s around the corner and you could score some nice deals there.</p>

laika
10-30-2006, 01:06 PM
An outlet?! [&lt;:o)] I had no idea--can you share the address?</p>

You are rightfully proud, I think. I also thought their inventory was quite unusual, especially the Dries buy. Even their Marni pieces were atypical.</p>

I suppose you are right about prices being high everywhere. Barney&#39;s mark-up is usually relatively decent, so they are always my point of comparison.</p>

I&#39;m going to be holding out for sales....</p>

</p>

Me too, between the falling $, inflation, and designer greed (don&#39;t know the proportions), I have been essentially priced out of the full price market in the past 3 years.</p>

Barneys does keep everyone else honest, it is also my point of comparison! Example - that beautiful black Raf sweater with shawl collar is $580 in Barneys and $650 at Atelier (and like $900 in Japan).
</p>

The outlet is right around the corner from the store, on Bond St. It&#39;s really really cramped, I wouldn&#39;t go just for the outlet, but next time you go to Butter, worth checking out. They opened it during the summer when the main store was being renovated, and they were planning to keep it open. Make sure I don&#39;t send you on your way for nothing, and give them a call or email http://www.shopbutter.com/

her name is emily... petite girl with brown hair. they do have some great stuff there.

laika:

the margiela bag (the large black shopping bag) is in the mid $700 at joan shepp. i forget the exact price but i think its $760. not too bad for a quality margiela piece! plus, it fits everything!
the jas bags are a really good option if you dont want to spend toooo much money on a bag. they are reasonably priced and hold up well! also, they are relatively simple, which i assume is what you were looking for! just beware because some of them have little fake diamonds on the handels which make them look a bit tacky. other than that, they are great! good luck finding something!

i have, and use to no end, the top bag by jerome dreyfuss. i first saw the bags in his store in paris, next to isabels. was very impressed by them. i did find mine on sale and they do go on sale. mick margo has a decent selection and pricing. leather is thick, soft and durable and the hardware is solid.

After years of carrying half my house with me in various messenger and tote bags, and killing my back in the process, I have decided to move towards something more dainty

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4008/image1pf.png
Dris Van Noten purse. actual colour is a lighter, almost gold-ish brown

It's JUST big enough for all my basic stuff, and I can't really fit a book in it but I don't mind. I feel so light, like I'm not carrying anything, it's really a nice change. It also makes me feel more feminine for some reason, and I don't spend 10mns finding stuff in it. so far so happy

She's handled julius bags before, and i think the twist and drape make this a bit more feminine style. not sure if it'll be too long or rugged though.

^ I tend to carry only men's bags for myself. However, they must be tote bags. Messenger slings will be long -- at least on me (5'4") -- most men's messengers hang too low on the waist to balance.

You may want to look into bags that have adjustable straps, unless your girlfriend is tall!

neat thing about m.a+ messenger, is the strap adjusts from petite to tall with just two clips. super nice bag that i wear constantly, and always seem to lose things in it because it's a deep cavern.

IF NY carries johnny farah which is worth looking at. the hardest decision is which shape you want because they are all beautiful.

I own a Johnny Farah messenger type bag and it is pretty nice. Nice textured leather with more conservative design but with slight edge. There were also some Johnny Farah left at IF basement sale I think.

That happened with mine as well. Actually it happened twice. I had it sent in for repair and a few weeks later the hardwear broke again.

A lot of the bags from the big fashion houses seem to have quality issues. A friend of mine recently bought a Chanel bag and had the stitching come apart within a few days. I don't know but if I fork over 4000 Euros for a bag I expect it to not fall apart after a couple of days[thumbdown]

Dang, I've wanted a nightingale for so long, so I'm bummed to hear that (but my wallet is excited) I also like the "Pandora" and the "Antigona" from Givenchy, though the latter to me seems more like a travel bag. I would hate to spend that much on a bag to have the hardware fall apart. I'm not much of a bag girl (I have 2) but I've got eyes for a ma+ accordion bag and will be staying away from designer women's bags.

Trust the topic of handbags to get me to come out of lurker status...

I know not everyone here likes Alexander Wang but I've been using my Kirsten Satchel for almost two years, every single day - I love it more than any bag I've ever owned, but I'm just starting to get some fraying on the handles where the edge seal is coming apart.

I thought my next bag might be a washed black Givenchy Pandora (if I could find one by the time I'm truly ready to give up my Kirsten) so I'm disappointed to read it has quality issues. Although everyone says Wang has quality issues and other than my well deserved wear-and-tear the quality of mine has been excellent.

For a more structured look I also love Fleet Ilya...

Well, it presents a philosophical dilemma. If the aforementioned bag already existed anyway (meaning already changed hands and thus you were not a part of the demand for such a bag), would your purchase still be a moral choice? Cause such a bag exists :-)

rider

...i see it this way, (of course, not saying it makes sense to anyone but me, but in my idealistic world of what is just this is my logic). even contributing to second hand or vintage feeds the market, just by the acceptance of being acquired at anytime, I would be linked to it. now, here is the moral line of demarcation i twist around in my head, the line that every human draws somwhere...the mere fact I purchase anything from said manufacturer can be argued as contributing to the market. its of course true, to a degree, and there lies the original line in the sand.
I'm crazy, right?
I want the bag but dont want the baggage.

BLESS no░ 04 bags
A, B, C, D and E are bags. Bags are functional products.
Functional products are stylefree. Stylefree means freedom in
fashion. Freedom in fashion could be dangerous without seasonal instruction advices. But missing instruction advices support consciousness in using fashion. Consciousness in using fashion means wearing function as a fashion discussion protector.

No one does like it like BLESS.

I think all this thing abouyt not beating cute animals is what we call in French "sensiblerie", like a sort of self-indulgent sensitivity. I try to eat animals who lived a decent life, which means no industrially produced meat. Also no endangered species obv. That actually makes a difference. Caring for animals means trying to go in a direction that benefits them (proper food and living space) instead of you (what they look like)

Honestly in terms of what is cute, I just draw the line at my own dog. Give me a lamb or bunny any time. I even like the taste of horse.

However, I'm not condemning anyone, I just find it hard to believe that anyone who isn't a teenage girl would draw the line at "cute"

I haven't got that many bags myself and only rotate between 2-3 of them. For everyday use my go to bag is the free slingbag from Antonioli. For formal purposes, it'll be YSL Muse Two which actually has served me well for the past 2-3 years, and for air travel my go-to bag would be my medium Celine Luggage which fits my laptop and all the other junk I'd need to travel long distance.

I'm hoping to get a bag from Guidi to replace the Antonioli sling bag one day. I did consider a Fendi Peekaboo at one point but I don't know how well they'd go with all of my clothes.

wholeheartedly agree with you. they are heavy though ;-)
the saturation of the dye makes the bags worth getting in a color other than black.

Guidi make colours so delicious. More recently I've been looking at some pastel shades. I own a bag in a eggshell blue/grey/yellow and it nicely offsets a full black outfit. For some strange reason I actually don't mind this colour - I have no idea why, it's baby pink. But it might be nice to wear some softer colours without having to go all out in a pretty pink dress. Or maybe it's just the novelty of seeing a pink version of my favourite black handbag.

Regarding Guidi, I recently purchased this bag (http://www.farfetch.com/shopping/women/item10942108.aspx) (pictured below). I tend to carry my entire life around with me, which is perhaps a neurotic compulsion, but I am usually frustrated by the the size and/or distracting embellishments on most of the women's bags I encounter. I wanted something straightforward and roomy, that would work with absolutely everything in my wardrobe.

It's almost perfect except for the strap length -- hangs a little too low on me because it's technically a men's bag and the model is obviously far taller than I am. The way the straps are stitched into the entire width of the bag, I wonder if it would cost an additional arm and leg to have Superior Leathers shorten it.

I'm still yearning for the perfect balance of capacity and beauty. The Givenchy Antigona remains the Jewish American Princess bag of my dreams, but I've put that on hold for now in favor of "Easy" tote. Not sure why Givenchy considers it easy... it's certainly not easy on the wallet!

The one on the bottom right reminds me much of an Italian brand called 'The Bridge':

http://www.bagboudoir.co.uk/ekmps/shops/boudoirbags/images/pre-owned-the-bridge-chestnut-brown-leather-medium-shoulder-bag-4384-p.jpg

I love the chestnut colored sturdy leather they use.
But my favorite brand for bags is Bottega Veneta. The make all sorts of woven leather bags. Like this one for example:

or the lazy version:

Mezeinee, it's a beauty and I'm sure they have more of them on Farfetch, which is where I purchased mine. I use it the most out of all my other handbags.

I joke that my affection for Givenchy is my Jewish Princess side coming out -- and that affection is a bit of a guilty pleasure -- but I am in love with many of their handbags, especially the Easy tote and the Antigona.

[lol] at the JAP reference :-) But I thought Celine has replaced Givenchy in that department?

I still think that the Nightingale is perhaps the best mass-market bag since the Balenciaga biker (whatever that name was).

Faust, yes, I believe it was the Balenciaga Motorcycle bag -- biker, motorcycle, tomato, to-mah-to. The bag with all the knobs and the little nubby feet! I love bags with the feet. They are cute enough that I once considered an Alexander Wang bag on that premise alone (I initially misspelled that as AlexANGER Wang, which is as Freudian a typo as I've ever seen).

The CÚline Luggage handbag and the Givenchy Nightingale I spot regularly in my old UES neighborhood, hence the JAP quip! I figure I owe my heritage some semblance of representation -- my last name sure as hell ain't Smith, after all [lol]

I actually just glanced at the CÚline website out of curiosity and the current season is quite beautiful, though I can't quite get on board with the 60s-esque color blocking. And the lines are too clean for my tastes; I need something that looks good stuffed to the brim, and that will take a beating gracefully. (That's what my Guidi bag is for.)

Well I am back in this thread again... the second free Antonioli tote bag I've been lazily using as a handbag for the last 8 months has finally broken (the first one eventually broke too and would you believe the store EXPRESS COURIERED a replacement to AUSTRALIA for FREE?! A free tote bag. What customer service!!!!). I can't possibly try to scam a third one from them, but it was just the right size and shape for my daily lugging needs.

voltbird this bag is almost my dream replacement but it is next-level big. I'm hoping for rough 45cm width replacement... but I really want both a cross-body strap and a short handle like this model. Guidi don't seem to do one like this any smaller that I can find online.

The next best option I found is THIS (http://cdn-images.farfetch.com/11/08/45/31/11084531_5210930_1000.jpg)Marsell but I really had my heart set on Guidi leather.

The Guidi Q15 looks only a fraction larger than my Antonioli tote so right now it's my other top option. But the short handles would be so great... I feel so confused.

ahn: 45cm width? Do mean length? If so, I believe what you're looking for is a Guidi Q20, which is smaller than the Q15, and is literally the 'perfect' everyday bag - for inside and outside of the office. It measures 46cm in length. Although it doesn't have a tote handle, you might be able to have one custom made with one. The one I have, I requested to have an internal pocket and to have the strap lengthened, so it's definitely worth a try.

Incarnation does nice bags with the shoulder-body strap and handle combination, though the handle is not short for what you're looking for:

No no, definitely 45cm wide, maybe 30cm from the opening to the bottom in length?

Those Incarnation bags LOOK absolutely PERFECT... I am going to e-mail The Archive and see if I can get the dimensions since they don't seem to be listed. [wub]

Next level big it absolutely is. So big I almost returned it for that fact alone! But then, I realized, who am I kidding. I carry around, at minimum, and at all times: my behemoth of a wallet, a change of clothes, my version of a first aid kit, and heavy duty headphones. Unsurprisingly it is now my most used bag, and I feel kind of naked without it:

http://i.imgur.com/dhyWHjz.jpg

That's it with a little more than the usual packed away, and when it's not so overstuffed, it wraps nicely around my leg and thigh and passes for being not quite so huge as it is. The only nuisance is that the leather stains my hands if I rummage through the bag too aggressively. Looks pretty metal, at least.

Now I feel like I have to ask... what do you all keep in your bags? (And if you're not like me, how in god's name do you survive leaving the house without everything packed away on one shoulder?)

-Small card holder ( I used to be a cash person but i feel that my bag is already quite heavy when it is empty so I try not to use my regular long wallet anymore)

-At least two different shades of lipstick

-Face powder

-Facial blotting paper

-Keys/Phone/Candy

-Some sort of hand wipes

I always have tons of random receipts and cards in my bag..

When I was younger I would try to bring a light book too and facial mist.

I need a new bag, and am considering Guidi. Does anyone have the SH4 or the backpack style (not sure of the style number)? I tend to use the same bag everyday. I'm looking for something that is easy to carry and can carry a lot.

Everyday carries are...

-- wallet/clutch (I finally found my perfect wallet/clutch! It is by a small leather-goods brand designed and manufactured in Melbourne. Stylistically speaking most of their range quite pedestrian but functionally this one piece was everything I'd been wanting and the design is perfectly minimal / inoffensive)

-- phone, keys

-- small zipper pouch with assortment of cosmetic essentials... lipsticks, concealer, nail file, mints, lip balm, floss, blotting papers, tissues etc [rolleyes]

-- several pens and a notebook with dated list of orders and the stage of production they're in

-- over-ear headphones

-- it's winter so currently an umbrella, but also sunglasses because it gets very glarey

PLUS
-- monday - friday; my lunchbox and sometimes breakfast too.

-- and throughout the day I inevitably accumulate various supplies and items I drop off/pick up from my casters on a daily basis.

It's really my headphones, umbrella and lunch that move my requirements for a bag into the larger category - even though it's so cumbersome sometimes when the large bag is empty, I can't stand dragging more than one bag around.

The SH4 is nice and so is the backpack, but I prefer the small weekender - I think the code is GB1A.

I have the medium bag and the backpack, two different colors.
I can attest to the fact that they both are very durable and can hold quite of bit of baggage, but you have to keep in mind that they themselves are rather heavy without anything even in them.

The backpack carries the most, can pretty much withstand anything you can fit into it along with the fact that it is carried in such a way that it makes lugging a heavy easy to carry. I tend to use the backpack in the fall/winter and for travel, the medium for warmer months. Both are excellent everyday bags that never show a mark.

If pretty and rugged is your thing, Cherevichkiotvichki is worth considering. her color saturation is decadent and they have an underlying 50's vibe, at least to me.

anyone with a "vanilla" colored Guidi bag?
is it insane to accept that it will see its share of distressing and staining and not cringe when it happens? [cry]
I think the color is a great accent to all the black that I wear.
Curious that I never worried about staining when it came to my white shoes but a bag seems more precious.

I am the opposite with my shoes and bags!

I have a light coloured (though not white) bag and so far I haven't had any major issues. I am only fearful of pen marks for some reason. The contrast with the black is so beautiful [wub] I don't think you should let fear of staining get in the way.

I was hoping you would post. I knew you would empathize with my dilemma. I keep taking it out of the sack trying to decide whether I should keep it or not. It's just so weird how when it comes to shoes I don't mind and actually enjoy the break in, but bags I want to protect. The color of this one is a little richer and deeper than the picture and I don't carry pens but the first wine mark will make me whine, no doubt. I guess I should just suck it up already and realize a few imperfections add character.

Of course you should keep it. It's amazing how Guidi can make their leather so rich, especially in colours other than black. It's the first imperfection that will be most painful. Then you can embrace each additional stain as building character.

Haha I remember the time someone spilt their drink all over my RO clutch. You can probably imagine my face.

It's really not the same but I got given a white suitcase for my birthday and my first reaction was alarm over the colour knowing what suitcases tend to go through by careless baggage staff. Of course began to scuff immediately, and it's now been on several flights and looks seriously beaten up. I'm severely anal retentive about this kind of thing but somehow I love it so much. The more beaten it gets the more character it has.

I think when it comes to guidi especially, the leathers are already mildly distressed - other than something sharp and unnatural like a pen-mark, I think darkening, marks and scuffs will just lend themselves to the character and aesthetic of the bag.
