    Yamamoto x Mikimoto

You know, Yohji is quitely following Rei - which much less fanfare, but nonetheless. After Mandarina Duck, now Mikimoto. Hmmm....

    Yamamoto Designs for Mikimoto

    April 10th, 2007 @ 12:24 AM

    New York

Mikimoto has tapped fashion designer Yojhi Yamamoto to create a
collection for the venerable jewelry house. The two Japanese houses
will join forces and design a 20-piece collection that will focus on
Mikimoto's star gemstone, the pearl, it was announced Tuesday.

"The pearl is a symbol of feminine perfection, and, in the
quintessential universe of fine jewelry, it stands alone," the jewelry
house noted. "For these reasons?Mikimoto's incomparable reputation for
designing, producing and selling the world's finest cultured pearl
jewelry made it a perfect choice for Yohji Yamamoto."

This is the first time Mikimoto has collaborated with a fashion
designer to create a collection of this magnitude. In 2001, the jewelry
house launched a fashion designer collection that combined talents with
Badgley Mischka, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Vera Wang to
    create individual pearl jewelry complements.

The Paris-based, Japanese-born Yamamoto is known for his
avant-garde clothing designs. In addition to designing for men and
women's collections, Yamamoto also designs the popular Y-3 line for
    Adidas.

The collection will be composed of three groups to make up 20
pieces and will officially debut at couture week in Paris in July. The
line will be available at Yohji Yamamoto and Mikimoto locations in the
states in November, and Europe and Asia in 2008.

I can't wait to see this. I hope he does some pieces with Tahitian pearls.

      Yep, this sounds promising.

Faust, as for Yohji's collaborations/lines, though they often don't get too much press in the USA (except Y-3, of course), he's actually got TONS of them in Japan. I'm always amazed by the sheer number of things he does that I see at the most random places.Like CdG, there are also tons of different lines in the Yohji umbrella, mostly produced in small quantities, but still at nearly every price point. There's Y's for Living (housewares including everything from bedding to plates to bathroom slippers), Y's for work (obviously, work clothes), there are a few different businesswear collaborations he does (one of them a moderately priced line of suits and blazers that I can't remember the name of off-hand, anyway it's the house brand for the department store Isetan), several shoe collaborations, a collaboration with parfumeur Jean Patou (which has disappeared after Patou was bought by P&G), now the ones with Mandarina Duck and Mikimoto, etc etc etc.

The man really gets around. And, like you said, I think the neatest thing about it is that he does them quietly; no major press statements, advertising blitzes, etc. he just works on them and lets them be rather quiet, to be "discovered" by his buyers. I think that is very interesting and adds an element of surprise in there that is quite refreshing.

/\ you are right, come to think of it. i have seen stuff for other labels here and there, like Y'saccs. Lack of fanfare is indeed refreshing.

He did a jew. collab with Yoshiko for Y's for SS07, too. I saw it when I was in Paris.
