Kinda pissed that Dark Knight didn't get a nomination, especially since the academy could grant LOTR a nomination (and win). I wanted it to win Best Picture.. but I guess SM will take it (why it shouldn't: see here). Also Leo not getting a nomination is absolutely ridiculous..

I want AR Rahman to win best score, either one of the SM songs to win best song, and WALL-E for best animated film!

Haven't seen enough of these movies to converse actively about this, but a few random thoughts:

            - Ben Button made best picture nom but Wrestler, Dark Knight didn't. Travesty Bickle. Saw Ben Button the other day and it was ambitious and had some gripping moments but was too uneven and like Ebert said in his review, I just find the premise kinda odd to begin with. The statement it was trying to make was just too convoluted and detached from the way its subjects were portrayed.

            - Mickey Rourke SHOULD win best actor. Haven't seen Milk which I think is the only competition he has, and Sean Penn doesn't need "Oscar validation" as much as Mickey deserves, H-Wood politics aside. I was happy when he won the GG, I'm rooting for him. And it WAS a virtuoso performance probably because it was close to home to the point of nonacting. I don't doubt Langella and Jenkins were great in their respective roles, and I want to watch those films, but they seem and feel like dark horse write ins to give the Acad some cred

            - Heath Ledger might as well win by default, it's not like anyone else is actually going to (or should) win it. Landmark performance that will be remembered 50 years from now. Even if you weren't caught up in the TDK hype, at least it should be a consolation for the amazing work he did in Brokeback, the guy is not getting any more chances at the podium anyway.

            - I have a hunch Boyle is gonna walk away with Best Director. Haven't seen Slumdog, have heard mixed reviews but it's probably a case of good timing. The movie hasn't even hit my shores yet and I can feel the ripple of the SM buzz waves already.

i think Leo has a case of Johnny Depp syndrome when it comes to Academy recognition. Either or both may pull a Scorsese and win some consolation/lifetime achievement late in the game.

Agreed. Think Ben Button will win a lot of the other categories though.

I must admit to some bias but I cannot believe Slumdog is nominated for Best Picture. I'm assuming that says more about the paucity of the competition last year that it does about Slumdog being genuine Oscar quality.

the hype around slumdog has been absolutely crazy. it came out of nowhere and EVERYONE is watching it and talking about it. It'll be interesting to see how far that will take this film at the Oscars.

Wall-E is going to do well in the sound/animation categories. Pixar knows their shit and got all the right people together.

It'll be an interesting Oscars... i pretty much watch the superbowl for the commercials when I do so it'll be a pretty non-event weekend hehehe

Would be amazing if Rourke won. Always liked him since I first saw Diner.

benjamin button was worthless....hate it almost as much as forrest gump buts its going for the same thing

Slumdog is worth it for a few hours but not deserving of any further acknowledgement.

Wrestler should have been up for more than it was...recently saw the Bashir movie which was very good as well.

                        end tirade....
