    Quotes

Ok, I've always wanted to write down quotes that I've come across, and being a lazy ass that I am, I've always put it off. I think this could be a good place, especially given that there are many interesting people on SZ. We already have a quotes about fashion thread, so let's make this about anything else. And let's keep this intelligent, please.

Everyone tries to create a world he can live in, and what he can't use he often can't see. But the real world is already created, and if your fabrication doesn't correspond, then even if you feel noble and insist on there being something better than what people call reality, that better something needn't try to exceed what, in its actuality, since we know it so little, may be very surprising. If a happy state of things, surprising; if miserable or tragic, no worse than what we invent.

      Mozambique by Amon Duul II

      Clap your hands
      Because you're gonna die

Every victim is searching for his hangman
Every hunter is stalking his prey
Victim find a victim and hang the hangman
Better to die as a free man than to live as a slave
      Clap your hands
      Because you're gonna die

The white beast is in the villages
      Dealing only in death
With his soul left behind him
      He is
      The raper of women
      Mutilator of children
      Murderer of men

      Unite and fight

I doubt they count as particularly intelligent, sorry Faust. Was listening to audio of Gore Vidal, and had to put in a few quotes, just because his voice is so fantastic.

The period of Prohibition — called the noble experiment — brought on the greatest breakdown of law and order the United States has known until today. I think there is a lesson here.
Do not regulate the private morals of people. Do not tell them what they can take or not take. Because if you do, they will become angry and antisocial and they will get what they want from criminals who are able to work in perfect freedom because they have paid off the police.

Religions are manipulated in order to serve those who govern society and not the other way around.

A narcissist is someone better looking than you are.

Never pass up a chance to have sex or appear on television.
Hobo: We all dress up. We all put on our armour before we walk out the door, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re trying to be someone else.

I too must attempt a way by which I can raise myself above the ground, and soar triumphant through the lips of men.- Virgil

How delightful are the pleasures of the imagination! In those delectable moments, the whole world is ours; not a single creature resists us, we devastate the world, we repopulate it with new objects which, in turn, we immolate. The means to every crime is ours, and we employ them all, we multiply the horror a hundredfold.

To judge from the notions expounded by theologians, one must conclude that God created most men simply with a view to crowding hell.

All, all is theft, all is unceasing and rigorous competition in nature; the desire to make off with the substance of others is the foremost -- the most legitimate -- passion nature has bred into us and, without doubt, the most agreeable one.

"The very first thing I remember in my early childhood is a flame, a blue flame jumping off a gas stove somebody lit...I felt fear, real fear, for the first time in my life...The fear I had was almost like an invitation, a challenge to go forward into something I knew nothing about....I have always believed and thought since then that my motion had to be forward, away from the heat of that flame." - Miles Davis
