DIY Leather accordian style bag with silver hardware

Inspired by the MA+ accordian bag, decided to experiment with making a bag.

I created the pattern myself through a bunch of experiments with paper/muslin. The leather is incredibly soft, some of the softest I've ever handled. I've never really worked with leather before, so it was a bit of an adventure.

I started by creating a pattern for the body, which is one single piece. It took a lot of experimentation to get the folding right. Once that was all done, I safety pinned the pleats in place, then prepared the silver. After that, punched the path through the pleats for the silver to connect to the strap.

The strap is a long piece of leather from the same hide, backed by a very stiff cotton canvas for support. (Thanks to MonaDahl for help sewing the strap). Then finished everything by connecting the strap to the body of the bag, and putting the flap closure in place.

Hardware (the strap connectors and front closure) is all silver, which I bought in rod form, and hand sawed, filed, oxidized, distressed, bent, and hammered.

Body is all one piece of leather, with no stitching whatsoever.

    Pictures of the bag:

Pre-attached hook closure (shows oxidization/distressing really well)-

Excellent job. What kind of leather did you use?

Thanks for the nice feedback everyone!

Who?- it's cow/calf leather, not sure which. Some kind of bovine, to be sure.

Nicely done! Did you reinforce the inside of the main body where the hook goes in? I was thinking of modifying mine to use a magnetic closure.

the bag is really nice JJBB,
and good to see Mona helping you ought!!!!!!!!!!!
my only issue is because of the cleanness of the body of the bag, maybe using a heavier leather for the strap and not stitching it, would have been a good alternative................

Wow, thanks you all for the great feedback!

sshum88- Only the strap is reinforced. The main body has enough pleats so that there isn't much stress on the leather where the hardwear goes through.

Zamb- That's great advice! I was thinking of something like that when I was first conceptualizing the bag. I had trouble finding some good, thick leather so I stuck with what I had. Do you have any recommendations for places in NYC that sell heaver oz leather? I got the hide for this from leather impact, but all the stuff there seemed relatively thin.

                    yes,

I am going to a place tomorrow, I will tell you what they have after I visit. Also, I have some heavy leather here in My Studio which should be able to work, so long as there is a color match, I can send you some snippets for you to test if you want...........

                            looks so good
like it almost as much as the original.
might want to try something like this myself now

as others have already stated: awesome work. one question though: how did you create the hardware for the piece?
