Coolest book shops and news stands

What are the coolest book and/or magazine shops in your city? I would like to know where you go to get your printed matter. I am thinking of a store with a good reputation that sells all kinds of books and/or magazines.

    I will kick it off.

    New York City, USA

    1. St.Marks Book Shop

Founded in 1977, St. Mark's Bookshop is an independent bookstore located in the East Village of Manhattan. What started as a small shop with a passionate

A well-curated selection of printed matter, from literature and criticism to art and photo books and magazines. No fluff.

    2. Dashwood Books

For all books on photography, including out of print and rare stuff.

Welcome to the website of Dashwood Books

    3. McNally Jackson Books

Another indie bookstore where literature and fiction are two different things, plus a well-edited section of magazines. A nice cafe with baked goods from Balthazar to boot.

McNally Jackson is an independent bookstore with four New York locations.

I cannot think of any well-edited and pleasant news stands, although we have plenty with the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mentality.

        - San Francisco -

So far, i've found Fog City News - small store, but a pretty good variety of magazines. No books though. Stocks Encens and 20 versions of Vogue, Gap Press Men, etc. But the reason i went there in the first place was their excellent chocolate selection! I'm sure there's others in the city.

Newsstand in San Francisco's Financial District that specializes in premium chocolate, gifts, and greeting cards.

        455 Market Street
        San Francisco, CA 94105

For curious torontonians or tourists, this is a pretty cool spot.

The Monkey's Paw is a Toronto antiquarian shop specializing in uncommon books and paper artifacts from the age of print.

          And a not-too-regularly-updated blog

...and the tide was way out.

                      It's a good one. I wouldn't say it's incredible, but it is well-edited.

For Angelenos, the exclusive stockiest for StyleZeitgeist magazine and other fine publications.
