Basinski's Disintegration Loops Live @ the Met 9/11

Free performance inside an Egyptian temple. The world's premier of the Loops being translated and performed for a live orchestra. This is likely to be a historic event and is a very appropriate way to commemorate the 10th anniversary.

sounds really cool, but why would you score this to a live orchestra and strip away the original context of the piece?

are the orchestra members going to slowly roll over on the ground or drift off stage as the piece progresses to visualize the feeling of decay?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but by that measure, wouldn't the CD/video itself be stripped of the context since the original "context" is the tape itself disintegrating?

In my opinion, the context (or meaning) is intact within the very sounds of the music as it slowly gives way. The actual performance needn't emulate that deterioration. In fact, to watch an ensemble make a carefully composed replication of the original, organic deterioration of the tapes is quite fascinating to me.

Full report later but this was extremely moving and perfectly executed.

Ochre, I think I saw you at the end of the show. Were you standing with a blonde woman?

Excellent performance and much more meaningful than a bunch of politicians making speeches.

                        D,

Yes I saw you briefly at the end. I apologize I only saw your PM now. I have been pretty busy this weekend. I hope you enjoyed the performance. I was completely stunned by it. One of my favorite moments was at the end of the song when the conductor held the entire room in silence for a few minutes. It was very Cageian of course but the feeling was so much more than that since it was obviously out of reverence for 9/11. Everyone was still.

Listen to and download the performance here

                        Here are some more photos.
