well, how something is worn can be avant-garde (or not) as well.

and a thought: does the term itself perhaps carry an element of 'this is not popular now, but it will be'? or can something be avant-garde even if it is never adopted by a broader audience?

well i believe the rule is when something is referred to as avant garde, it very likely isnt.

and id say most avant garde ideas never make it into the mainstream.

edit: Is Lady Gaga and Iris Van Herpen avant garde?

which/have any designers used magnetic closures?

(I know the idea of this might be appalling for some)

but being avant-garde is about leading, no? which seems to imply there is someone else who will follow, sooner or later.

if not, then what is the difference (if any) between the terms 'alternative' (i.e. being an outlier) and 'avant-garde'...?

Avant-Garde means being ahead of its time, for me also that something has not been there before, whereas "alternative" could be anything besides what is "en vogue". "Avant-Garde" is definitely "alternative", but not the other way round, because "alternative" could also be "retro" or even anything not "mainstream". Maximum nit-picking here.

Iris van Herpen is definitely Avant-Garde. Compared to her I fail to see others applying to that term. Lady Gaga is novelty.

sure avant garde ideas will be followed by people but i dont think its mainstream popular.

                just as an example
people like Erik Satie were avant garde with minimalism in music in the late 1880s or so. eventually people like Phillip Glass now are following that style. Is Glass avant garde? perhaps only if you dont know Satie. And sure Glass is very influential and popular now but the mainstream is still Jay-Z, Rihanna ect ect

thanks! I'll look in to it.

Acronym stuff is one of the few contexts where it would make sense.

seems like a really big contradiction.

seems like a really big contradiction.

Why? When it's before the crowd and isn't trendy — it's avant-garde. Once the crowd catches up, it's not avant-garde, so it could be trendy. And avant-garde is a whole different thing this time.

It depends on how you interpret the quote.

I took it to mean "What is avant garde now will never be popular" which contradicts the definition of avant garde as something that sets trends or "comes before".

your interpretation is fine too though. The sentence is ambiguous.

Bought some Ann D outerwear from FW2011. I'm happy that I didn't size down, it would have been a mistake. Fit is slightly relaxed as it is meant. I was a bit worried, because there was so much talking about weird sizing. Perfect

Wonder if Dries, Rick, and Yohji had a conference call together and conspired to put body/jacket straps in their SS15 collections.
