Slavoj Zizek for Abercrombie & Fitch
tossed a coin and the WTF thread lost out. and, this made me happy:
Zizek bristled at the suggestion that there was anything unseemly about an internationally renowned intellectual writing copy for a clothing catalog. ''If I were asked to choose between doing things like this to earn money and becoming fully employed as an American academic, kissing [EXPLETIVE] to get a tenured post,'' he growled, ''I would with pleasure choose writing for such journals!''ain't no beauty queens in this locality

Oh, no, an intellectual railing against academia! He must not be an intellectual at all!Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months - Oscar Wilde

Academia as a concept has strayed far from what is now called a "university". I don't know about Europe, but for America and Australia, I'm sure of it.
(sometimes initial capital letter) . the milieu or interests of a university, college, or academy; academe.

okay the only reason why I'm still bothered to reply to you is because I really want to make this point about universities especially and you just misinterpreted what zizek said+ what others have said here about intellectuals.
to add to your definition: "Academia is the community of students and scholars engaged in higher education and research."
It is the millieu of a univeristy, not the university itself. Nowhere in either yours or my definition does it mention the "institutional" aspect of academia. The very early academics did not have an institutional basis because their concerns were education and research, not making fuckloads of cash.
When zizek says he'd rather write shit all for abercrombie and fitch than kiss ass to get a higher position in a university, he's railing against a part of the institution which has nothing to do with academia. If anything its the bastardisation of academia.
