Funny how quite a bit of it looks clumsy and unappealing in retrospect.

Yeah, you definitely had to be there at the time (hence my comment above). It was a zeitgeist shifting thing. It's not as obvious from the collections as from the ad campaigns, the changing of the silhouette, the PR blitzkrieg, etc. Hedi at Dior was the first designer that convinced the mainstream man (and by that I mean, the GQ-reading, Hugo Boss wearing male) to try something more adventurous. For better or worse.

Those long coats are absolutely divine. This collection's tailoring, combined with the very heavy wool/cashmere fabrics resulted in some seriously beautiful garments. I'd kill for the coat in picture #3.

Haha, true. Am also shocked at how absurd some of these models look ... like twelve year olds stealing stuff from their older brother's closet.

That said, considering this is from 2002 and it's such a stylized aesthetic, it's held up pretty well.

Thank you for the retrospective. It is a beautiful collection.

A 10th anniversary. bravo! They still look modern and beautiful in 2012. Thanks Hedi Slimane and the behinded designer of AW02 who I guess that he is Nicolas Andreas Taralis.
