Also took a while near the Carpathian high peaks (Romania and al.). Considering how decentralized societies could be don't forget that after a few generations re-christianization (yes I just made up that word) was often needed. Illiterate priest+population+no contact w. church authorities=beatification of dogs and pagan worship in the "catholic" church.
