    Glad you like!

On Baudelaire: The best place to start is "The Painter of Modern Life" which is in a book of essays by the same name. It's more theoretical than critical, but absolutely seminal.

    A taste for you....

"...it is much easier to decide outright that everything about the clothing of an age is absolutely ugly than to devote oneself to the task of distilling from it the mysterious beauty that it might contain, however slight or minimal that element may be. By "modernite" I mean the ephemeral, the fugitive, the contingent, the half of art whose other half is the eternal and the immutable."

Never seen it, but sounds really great. Some of those people are out of business now and they were fantastic in their day. Jurgi Persoons was one of the most talented designers I've ever come across - his stuff was simply astounding.

Laika, let me know how the book is - the Bless duo make some quirky stuff.

found the site for the event the book is on

              Mode 2001

there's shop window photos and some "what are you wearing today" photos i haven't flipped through yet, but could be entertaining.

here's another blurb about the book (there's actually two books to it)

              Antwerp=Fashion=Culture=Mode
2001=Landed-Geland. This equation stands for the cosmopolitan,
idiosyncratic, fascinating, and stimulating event that was Landed-Geland,
a six-month, citywide, multimedia extravaganza that recently colored
and clothed the city of Antwerp in the name of fashion. Twenty five
rotating billboards displayed 75 radical images by international
designers; the exhibit Mutilate? examined the phenomenon of fashion
from an ethnic and historical perspective; another exhibit, 2 Women,
examined Gabrielle Chang and Rei Kawakubo, two maverick designers of
indisputable importance; and 300 interviewees were asked the question:
“What was your most intense emotion ever as regards fashion?” And here
              is the catalog.

Does anyone have book recommendations on more techincalaspects of clothing? fabrics, pattern making, etc. Perhaps a thread about that in the DIY forum would be better suited.

I have been DYING to find a copy of this ever since I heard about it,
and I've still yet to turn up a copy, except in a very shady UK bookshop.

Opening Ceremony told me they should be getting some copies in,
but they have no clue when.

If anyone at all can point me in the right direction...

As for Sample, I actually worked at Phaidon when that book was being
published; the book release party was nice... we kept it under tight wraps,
though... usually, people pilfer copies for themselves, no problem at all,
but this? No way. I really, really wanted nothing more than to swipe a copy.

I think I'll pick up the softcover, now that it is out.

Ah, I was a little unclear; my mistake!

Whilst I am definitely going to be picking up
Sample soon, what I really have my sights set
                      on is the Bless book.

I need it in my life, desperately,
and I'm betting on the SA at Opening
Ceremony just wanting to appease me.

Try getting in touch with Printed Matter, Inc. The
book is not on their website, but I'm sure they could facilitate your
acquisition. It might be cheaper than OC too...You could also try the publisher directly.

No answer from Sternberg Press fora few weeks now, and their online catalog
fails to list the book, or stockists of their titles in general.

I will, however, definitely try Printed Matter- they've never failed me in the past, and
I should've thought of them, but it just didn't cross my mind. Thanks for the heads up.

Let us all know when you get your copy and your impressions of the book!
