The merch is tied into whatever TV or movie props are being sold. The influence between these media and fashion goes both ways.
Not only is there the potential for something of interest coming out (Zam has had his clothing on TV, inaisce in Hunger Games) but, apparently my hyperbole with "extreme generosity" and smiley weren't enough to bring the sense of play into my post ;-)
