Never read it in school actually. Although this is my second reading I never really got into Hamsun until a few years after i finished school.

I read this when I was supposed to visit Shikoku (and primarily Kochi) last May, but I never made the trip! It's a great book.

Not reading in full, but about to start comparing Master and Margarita in Russian and English. Being a guest lecturer ain't no picnic.

Has anyone read Umberto Eco On Literature? Worth it?

It is a decent piece of critique and I would recommend it to you Faust, but I of course do not know how much you are into literary criticism in general.

I'm reading "Objectivity" (MIT Press), a history of the attempt to achieve perfect objectivity in the arts and sciences. Recommended.
Also improving my knowledge of Japanese authors - Yukio Mishima, Kenzaburo Oe and Yasunari Kawabata. I don't think any style of literature is as underrated as the post-modern Japanese.

First post here in ages, I guess that return to Atelier yesterday for the first time in a year (re)started something.

No, Foucault's pendulum sorta made me edgy about reading any more Eco (also read The name of the rose). I assume it could be interesting considering his reputation.

Did you like The Name of the Rose? Sounds like quality easy reading.

Yeah I liked it, dense but accessible. Well my copy didn't have latin translations and didn't explain the references so maybe not that accessible...

Thanks, Fuuma. I ordered it a few days ago from Amazon.
Nice choice, justine. If you are curious, the book that inspired BNW is called We, by Yevgeniy (Eugene) Zamyatin.
