    Carpe Diem Horse Leather Trousers

    Hi All,

I am a newbie to this forum, so please be kind if I have any missteps in the first little while.

Sometime in the early 2000s, I walked into one of my favourite shops, Degli Effeti in Rome where I saw these wild new clothes hanging on meat hooks. They reminded me of something that Mad Max would wear. I was immediately attracted to a pair of leather trousers and I was told that they were made of horse leather. They were practically bullet proof, which completely intrigued me. I was further intrigued when one of the guys in the shop told me that Lenny Kravitz had bought a pair of these very same trousers. I had never tried on leather pants in my life until that point, but when I did, I knew that I had to have them, despite the price (which if I remember correctly was about Euro 1800). I remember walking out of the store in these absolutely stiff pants and making my way across the city towards my hotel which was atop the Spanish Steps. Once I got to the Steps, I had to take each step straight-legged, one step at a time. I'm sure all of the teenagers who were lining the steps people-watching, were having a great time laughing at me, but I didn't care because I loved those pants. And I wore them for years even though I never did any other research into Carpe Diem.

Cut ahead to the present day and I pulled the pants out because I haven't worn them for the last few years. I pulled them on and they're now a little bit big for me because I'm in better shape now than I was back then. The pants are probably a 48 and I need a 46. I also no longer liked the width of the leg.

So - and I'll probably be crucified by the purists out there for what I'm about to say - I took it to my local leather specialist and had the legs taken in to be more in keeping with the tight leg look that I favour (more like the silhouette of Bill the Butcher's pants in Gangs of New York). The problem is that although the tailor did an admirable job by equalizing the alteration from both the inside and outside of the leg, due to the construction of the pant, he could only go about midway to the hip on the outside. What I mean is the outside seam is a topstitch from the waist down to about mid-hip (i.e. maybe 5 or 6 inches), where it then transitions to an inner stitch (I hope I'm describing this properly). Thus, even though I have the nice tight leg look, the hip is a little wide which makes it not perfect.

Anyone have any ideas on how to address this? Also, were these pants common (as CD goes)?

    Thanks in advance.

          Pics of Horse Leather pants

          Hi All,

Ok, here are some pics of the pants. They're incredibly thick and heavy leather - much thicker than an Incarnation horse leather jacket which I recently purchased. They have a full cotton lining which you can see in the pics. I bought these in about 2001/2002 which I remember because I had just bought the first generation iPod.

Since I took in the legs, I really like the line, but the waist and hips are too big for me because I'm trimmer now than when I bought them. I'm a 46 and these would be a 48 at least.

The fourth pic shows the transition of the outer seam from a topstitch to an inner stitch.

I don't see a problem with getting rid of the topseam and just making it a regular seam all the way.

However, where does the seam end? from the first photo it looks like it ends at the top of the front pocket, which is a continuation of a seam that goes all the way around the back? In that case, its a bit tricky to extend the seam further than that if you want to also take the waist in. I suppose you could continue it straight up but that mean you'd have a seam going over the pockets as well as breaking the waist band.

as you can tell, I'm not a purist in the sense that I think its fine to alter any piece of clothing, as long as you don't interfere with the overall design but rather mthe fitment and how it works for you. But this is up to everyone's own discretion, they are your pants so do what you want with them.

              Hi Lowrey,

You've nailed my dilemna. The waistband and the piece between the waistband and the pockets are all one-piece without seams, so breaking them with a seam would alter the construction/design of the piece. Maybe I'll try trading with someone on the forum for another pair of horse leather pants in my size.

              Thanks for your input.

Any info on this CDiem piece? Carpe is known for its leather shirts but I haven't read much about their leather jackets. Was the reverse horse leather jacket something he did every season?

It's one of the older pieces. CDiem started out with those super heavy, bulletproof leather jackets. To be honest, they are so fucking heavy that wearing one all day becomes a burden.

CD leather, originally made for Altieri's kid AFAIK then given to friends when they had their daughter. The thing is two layers and looks really cool but it is apparently not a hit with children, the heathen tending to prefer less restrictive apparel.

^ I wonder if his child will grow up to be an entrepreneur just like dad. Of course forcing upon creativity often wont work and would need to be natural.

Notice the C-diem tag, very cute!

Out of all the words to describe Altieri, "entrepreneur"?

Now when I come to think of it, I now laugh as to why I chose that word (unintentionally). Although fundamentally interprets my view on the fellow other than simple 'designer'. Slightly ironic really

Ah, the age of Instagram, when every schmuck gives himself a license to photograph without permission. All the mystery is gone. There will be no more Altieris, Margielas, Paul Harnden's.
