I rarely rent a vehicle when I am in LA...usually rely on friends for major jaunts, etc.

however, if you can get out to West Hollywood it's easy enough to walk from the Bev Center to Maxfield, HLNR, Chrome Hearts and with some patience out on Melrose to Fred Segal/Ron Herman, Maxfield Bleu and Melrose place shops or venture down 3rd Ave for South Willard and other cool local shops and restuarants. And hitting the luxe turisty Rodeo area is totally a walking area (Barneys, Saks and Neimans are all on Wilshire) and then there all the shops on and off Rodeo to Santa Monica.
