Hi guys, haven't been on this forum for quite a while. Anyway, I was reading through this discussion about the focus on the back on Yohji's pieces and it kind of clicked in my head. Here are some shots that I've taken from my personal YY collection to further illustrate this point:

    Vest hybrid shirt - SS08

    "Cut" blazer - SS09

    Asymmetrical blazer - SS09

    Collar from a shirt - SS10

      V&A Yohji retrospective

      The main exhibition space

So this is the space where the core of the exhibition will be housed in: Gallery 38, the last of the three exhibition courts currently used to display the V&A’s main exhibition programme. Roughly 320 square metres in size; formerly the south court gallery, home to the RAF trainee canteen during the Second World War (see image above), it is a pretty impressive room in its own right.

For the Yohji Yamamoto exhibition, one of the design intentions is to highlight the high and beautifully arched ceiling by creating scaffold towers that will reach 7 metres at their highest points. These will house parts of the multi-media timeline we are putting together to highlight some of the wider context of Yohji Yamamoto’s work.

Research trip to Kyoto and Tokyo

As part of my research for both the exhibition itself and the accompanying book , I endeavoured on my first trip to Japan in February of this year. The plan was to visit Kyoto to see some of the craftspeople that contribute to the making of Yohji Yamamoto’s incredible garments. The second stop would be Tokyo, or rather Shinagawa, where I would visit the headquarters and, rather nerve-wreckingly, have to interview Mr. Yohji Yamamoto for the publication.

First stop Kyoto, home of small craft industries in particular textiles and ceramics. The Kyo-yuzen dyeing technique originated here in the 1700s and it was the making of this particular kind of Kimono I was about to witness. From the first visit to Chiso in Kyoto (one of the most eminent of Kimono-making companies established in 1555 and also a close collaborator of Yohji Yamamoto) until completed Kimono can take up to three months and hundreds of man-hours designing, dyeing and making it .

The tag code list to identify the correct season of a garment from 2000 and onward, i.e. with numerical sizing

                          in alphabetical order:

                          HB -- SS00, AW06
                          HC -- AW10
                          HE -- SS02, AW08
                          HJ -- SS10, AW04
                          HM -- SS08, AW02
                          HN -- AW05
                          HQ -- SS03
                          HR -- SS06
                          HT -- SS07, AW00
                          HU -- AW03
                          HV -- SS09, AW01
                          HX -- SS01, AW07
                          HY -- SS05
                          HZ -- SS04, AW09

I'm reasonably sure that this list is correct, but please correct any mistake. For full disclosure, I have seen one piece (turtleneck) with numerical sizing which was marked HA. This was the only time I've seen HA tagged.

Do you know if the fabric numbers are non-seasonal?

Yeah, I'm also confused why they use the same code for different seasons. When seeing a garment in person, it's usually easy to identify as a spring or fall piece but in pictures it can be tricky if there are no signature details to be seen.

wire.artist and chameleon, you guys rock.

I don't even want to know why my shirt has 'B' as the garment type. Blouson? Blouse?

                                Thanks a lot guys.

Any idea how it works before the '00s?

I've got a YYPH jacket that starts with HF, sized M.

And then a YYPH suit (with the older-looking signature on the label) that's entirely without the numbering system.
