    The Sartorialist Exhibition in Chelsea

Kids, see what a camera, a blog, and lots of connections can do for you!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/24/fa...ss&oref=slogin

    Before the Image Fades

BY 7 p.m. on Tuesday, the
line of fashionable people trying to get into the Danziger Projects
gallery on West 26th Street to see a show by Scott Schuman, a
photographer who takes pictures of fashionable people, had reached 10th
Avenue and passed beneath a billboard that presumably was intended to
    tweak them on their behinds.

?Fashion and art are a scrawny couple,? read the billboard (a
running gag on the neighborhood galleries by the French artist Patrick
    Mimran).

    Harumph.

Tell that to the kid with the sunglasses, the buffalo plaid jacket
and tight jeans tucked into white high-tops, or the pair of older men
(in their 30s) in bespoke suits with coordinating tattersall patterns
and flipped collars, flicking cigarettes with impatience at the crowd.

Since Danziger opened its show for Mr. Schuman, known for the
on-the-street portraits of guests at runway shows that he posts for
public commentary on a blog called The Sartorialist, skeptics have been
    in the minority.

Mr. Schuman, who quit a career running a fashion showroom to begin
his life as The Sartorialist two years ago, has developed a cult
following, with more than 50,000 visitors to his site on busy days. He
also works for Style.com and writes a
monthly page for GQ. Danziger had sold about a dozen prints by
Wednesday, beginning at $1,200 ? a bargain by Chelsea standards.

?I haven?t sold anything for $1,200 in 10 years,? said James Danziger, the gallery owner.

Mr. Schuman, who is 40, said he was not entirely surprised by the
reception. His method of spontaneously capturing the style of a moment,
and in relation to its setting, could be roughly thought of as the
fashion world equivalent of August Sander?s encyclopedic portraits of
the German population in the early 20th century. Even in the
homogenized world of fashion, there are types and variations of style
from city to city, as Mr. Schuman?s portraits depict.

?I still see very much a difference when I am shooting in London,
Paris or Milan,? he said. ?We are still very unique creatures with very
unique cultures that I am sure are crossing over a little more, but
they are not as homogenized as you would think.?

i've been reading his blog for a year now, and for the first months thought it was great and then tired of it quickly. the comments are predictable and how can one man stand so much virtual ass kissing? and his taste is pretty awful...its sad that fashion, art, and photography can degenerate so quickly on a blog.
One wonders where it will end, when everything has become gay.

I've noticed the same. A year ago, there seemed to be more variety in what showed up. A couple of Raf pieces, someone decked out in Yohji alongside someone in Thom Browne and then some just generally stylish individuals. It seems to have gotten more and more staid as it becomes more popular.

Well, the aim of the blog was a commercial one from inception. The upbeat tone and purposeful channeling of negative comments into positive ones was very unnatural. Needless to say it paid off handsomely.

Judging the art by the audience? Seems unfair.

he has the option to take out the negative comments, so while he leaves one or two in, the rest are gone. but most people just leave nauseatingly positive comments w no insight at all. this is my holden caulfield mentality cluing in, the whole endevour, audience and artist, reeks of phoniness. maybe this is the best way to put it: he found a way to take the street out of the street.

Agreed. Someone mentioned this blog to me about a year ago and initially I found it all quite exhilarating to see all the different styles, but after a while Scotty-boy's comments and not-so-coy self-promotions started to get on my man-boobs and I began to desist. Some of the pics are great but who needs the commentary?

I still don't buy it. No one is claiming that Scott is a great editor / moderator / curator, nor is anyone holding up his site as an example of intelligent fashion discussion. Danziger hung a show of his photos, which, on the whole, are pretty interesting and represent a reasonable cross-section of street styles.

so if he's none of these things, and surely then he is not a great artist, but why are you defending him as an artist? it's not art. its a trendy blog. put into a possible trendy gallery. i think he works working for fashion magazines or mens style blog.

Can't knock the guy for being able to walk around the street, taking pictures for a living though. Dude's got it made. [75]

Great is subjective, but I do think that fashion photography (and certainly his unique take on it) qualifies as art. While the blog is a trendy delivery mechanism, I don't think that it takes anything away from the photos. Alex Soth posted his photos in a blog, Jason Salavon's work is online in a blog-like format, even Kalina's blog probably qualifies as art. And it's not like this is a MOMA retrospective; one of Chelsea's responsibilities is to show things that are of the moment.
