    Re: Art shows you should see

    Hyena Men at YM was good. I also liked the Japanese photographer who took pictures of people having sex in public parks.</P>

    Also, VERY good at YM in the "West Gallery" or whatever their "up and coming" area is called was Indre Serptype's "State of Silence."</P>

    I try to go now and then to the openings and stay abreast with things via www.artcal.net </P>

        Not sure about ticket availability, but this thing is a pretty unusual ride.

          very strong recommendation to see this Courbet show at the met. </p>

          for those of you who have never seen it in france, you can see the "origin of the world"</p>

          </p>

          also saw the guggenheim show. pretty fucking crazy. Cai Guo Qiang. say it with me now.</p>

          make a date of it.</p>

          </p>

          [/quote]</p>

          only had a few minutes to walk through since the galleries were closing but nice collection of nudes, dont you think? have seen the origin of the world in France before, but nice to see it in the context with these nudes all in one small room. </p>

          was particularly drawn to Sleep</p>

          and to Woman with Parrot. </p>

          something about the poses that made me linger longer. other less known pieces were really nice as well. too many people crowding around of course. </p>

          also enjoyed the landscapes and seeing Le Gray's photographs along side. very nice correlation. </p>

          also really enjoyed being able to get close and look into the eyes of The Desperate Man.

            should be a great project. i saw the film at his show in berlin, and diane shamash, who died recently of cancer, and headed minetta brook, was a friend and always did really great projects. very tragic to lose her.

              I think it's important to see the film on the boat. It gives it a completely different context; you're riding past the statue of liberty, the bastion of freedom, a testament to the great history of New York, hearing about how Henry Hudson and crew were effectively mercenaries for hire who slaughtered the natives to further the beaver fur trade.

                I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a single "explorer" or "colonizer" from this time period who wasn't both ruthless and mercenary, regardless of the country of origin...I tend to avoid the tired "colonial exposes" because it is neither surprising nor interesting to hear about another European "hero" who was in truth greedy and callous; at this point, they should be considered to have been prerequisites for the deplorable job they set out to do...</p>

                    Re: Art shows you should see

                    Moma show on colours is actually a camouflaged minimalist show so to those who like when they get out those Judd, Kelly, Stella, etc pieces you have to go. I have no idea why they didn't balance that with a more romantic and personal view of colour but hey, a bad angle sometimes make for a great expo.
