Discovered the "Old Fashioned" cocktail (bourbon, sugar, angostura, orange liquor, ice) thanks to Mad Men. Love it.

The old fashioned is a great drink - it doesn't have orange liquor in it, though. It might have an orange wedge muddled around in it (which can make the drink too sweet), but that's it. There are a lot of variations that are good - Dutch gin old-fashioned, the Sazerac (which has rye, Peychaud's bitters, sugar, and absinthe)...make it with gin and take the sugar out and you've got a pink gin.

If you like Captain Morgan, try finding a bottle of Old Monk - it's a vanilla-scented rum from India. If you like Captain Morgan, you will probably like Old Monk, but Old Monk has a lot more going on.

I am a fan of Old Monk, but its mighty hard to find it in the US. Where have you been able to find it?

As for drinking, I have been basically going back and forth between vodka tonics and beer. Magic Hat No. 9 in particular. Any beer fans here should definitely try to get their hands on this beer.

#9 is pretty much all I drank when I lived in Boston... some of the Magic hat seasonals are ace as well. Ah, good times.

no but i could use some recommendations... the french shit is burning a massive hole in my wallet.

I've also started to look more closely at single grape varietals recently, trying to learn the flavour of grape type to its region. aussie's been in my radar for a year now but i just dont know where to start.

what do you drink? or want tips on? I am a wealth of information on Australian Reds, some whites and Southern Australian Sparkling wines.

i mean to start off with, i find the australian wines lacking in complexity. there's plenty of bolt fruit (especially the merlots i tried), and the syrahs are pretty nice and strong too, but often they fail to provide an interesting/ complex tannin and after taste.

i'm looking for something that can disprove that judgement i guess, cos i know thats not true across the board.
