Perfect! Now I have lunch/dinner planned.

We will only be there for 2 days and then heading to Philadelphia for a show, but I will definitely send a PM if I have other questions.

    I sincerely appreciate your help!

EN is my spot. I take everyone there. Actually, when I was doing my taxes for last year I calculated how much money I spent there. I think they owe me a meal.. or two.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good leather jacket specialist who can swap out a broken zipper? Thanks!

Does anyone know of a good place where I can have an alteration done on a BBS J3?

Still a while from now, but finally after years of contemplating, I've finally decided to make the plunge and move to NYC next August. After living in LA, SF, HK, I'm really excited to change it up. That said, I'll be going to b-school in the upper west side and excited to hopefully meet a lot of fellow SZ'ers. Any tips (grocery stores, places to live, etc.) would be appreciated :)

Welcome! Things are dire, but I still wouldn't think of living anywhere else in the States. Finding a place to live will be your hardest experience, unless you have lots of money. If money is no object, I suggest living somewhere on the 2/3 line that will whisk you to UWS in 10-15 minutes. West Village, TriBeCa, West SoHo, Chelsea in order of my ideal preference - all really expensive. Hell's Kitchen is less expensive, and there are good restaurants and bars to be found. Upper West Side is lovely architecturally and close to two gorgeous parks (Central and Riverside), but it's full of old people or families with young kids, the restaurants and bars are of the basic bitch/vanilla variety. So, you'll need to figure out (besides rent) whether you want to travel for school or want to travel for going out. UWS is full of grocery stores, starting with Zabar's, a place of holy pilgrimage for all things culinary and Jewish, and ending with your basic Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. But now there are Whole Foods and Trader Joe's almost everywhere, so...

Alternatively, you might look in Long Island City / Astoria for a less expensive locale than Manhattan with quality housing and amenities. Also about 15-20 minutes to the UWS, depending on where your courses are, and 10 minutes to either midtown Manhattan or Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

I would avoid Brooklyn rentals entirely on a grad school budget unless you're ready to overpay for some shithole an hour away from class, with perhaps the tentative exception of downtown near Barclay's center. Even then, vastly overpriced as a ratio of income-to-rent compared to Manhattan and Queens.

The Bronx I have no strict views on -- some parts are quite nice but not my cup of tea as the developments are usually older.

Things aren't quite as dire as Faust makes them out to be, especially in New York where the cultural disposition doesn't change relative to the rest of the country and the rents are steadily falling.

Thanks, guys for the tips. I'm hoping moving from SF will make the sticker shock of rent prices manageable -- alternatively, I may just live on campus for the first year but I hear semi-horror stories. Apologies if this is a dumb question (newbie!), but how is living in upper west or upper manhattan or even harlem -- that's close to my b-school. And can't wait to meet the SZ NYC crew finally

Ah, yeah, if you are moving from SF, you are good, hahaha. Well, I already said what living on UWS will look like. UES is I think is a bit worse. Harlem, depending on the are, could be fun as it's gotten quite safer than it used to be. There are some really beautiful brownstone blocks there - it's full of history. I'd still be careful walking along at night, but you'll be good otherwise south of 125th St.

UES is a drier atmosphere and has fewer transportation options, food is a bit more expensive than UWS but housing can be significantly cheaper. If you do UES I'd stick closer to Central Park if you can.

Agree Harlem has gotten quite nice, there are both brownstones and high rise developments. 97th to 125th is very safe and usually tranquil.
