at least where i come from, america's low standards of living are why multiculturalism could be seen as failing (note: it isn't). ties into income inequalites but that's a difficult issue to tackle as globalization is bound to have a huge impact on the supply and demand of labor. i think it's definitley proven to be terrible for the market and the current distribution of wealth is not how you increase investment in one's own country.

the tea party folks, who are 8yrs too late to the party, should take note of this but they're obviously too fixated on maintaining their current standards of living rather than trying to think of what kind of spending best creates long term growth.
