Required listening for Faust:
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale! KRS-One - S/T! THE MIGHTY WUUUUU!!! 36 Chambers! GZA - Liquid Swords (saw it live - so amazing)! Does the Roots count? Outkast - ATLiens! and of course... Da Drought 3 (Lil Wayne, duh)! Andre Nikatina - Hell's Kitchen! Dizzie Rascal - Boy In Da Corner!
I know I'm skipping a bunch, but let me know what you think after you give them a listen.

Ok, I'll give you the Roots. But is it really rap?Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months - Oscar Wilde

hmmm. sounds like a stalemate. but I would say Roots would have to at least cross into rap territory.
if you've actually heard the other stuff I'll concede. there's no hope. we've lost you to the darkside.Originally posted by merzperhaps one day pipcleo will post a wywt so non-euclydian & eldrich in its shapes as to turn all onlookers into throngs of dishevelled, muttering idiots

We lay low glitter wax full bangles
Priceless rolls, lay around the God get tangled
Woolly hair, eyes firey red, feet made of brass
Don't fuck with Ghost you'll feel sorry
This is the good hip-hop youtube video thread now

92 as a cut off year?
I dunno, but after that you had
Doggystyle
Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
Enter the 36 Chambers
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Reasonable Doubt
Illmatic
ATLiens
Soul Food (Goodie Mob, not the film soundtrack)
Resurrection
The Infamous
and quite a few more a bit hungover to name at this moment...granted, not all of them may help the case for someone who is anti-rap in general, but I think a few of those above make a pretty good case for hip hop in the 90's (which of course has ended up better than the first decade of 2000s)

Look at 1989-1992, though.
Low End Theory. Nation of Millions. 3 Feet High and Rising. Paul's Boutique. De La Soul is Dead. Quik is the Name. Amerikkas Most Wanted. Death Certificate. Adventures of Slick Rick.
Pre-1989, you're closer to first-generation hip-hop, which hasn't aged as well. Eric B and Rakim released Follow the Leader in 1988 - that changed everything and started a new era once people had a chance to process it.

eric B, epmd, NWA all good stuff. not to sound like an old fart but there's no social commentary anymore short of comon who i think raps specifically for guilty white people. none of my black friends can stand his shit.
i even like special ed and all the trite old crap.

I almost feel like they could've pushed it a little further but the imagery in that is pretty cool.
