can't say i've been following much def jux in the past few years, but i will say that el-p's production a while ago was rock solid. his sci-fi beats on cannibal ox's debut was fucking gold. i loved it. aesop rock is a better rapper than he his a producer. his beats are pretty weak.
Did you get and like the larger dick?

Where's the love for Lupe Fiasco in this thread? I thought he'd have been the obvious choice...

I haven't seen this song on youtube yet (not one thats live) and its Lupe's best song! listen and learn from the master.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I'm going to assume you're new to rap Faust, hence why you started this thread. If this is true, you need to build yourself up. The easiest way to do this is to start around '93 and flavour yourself until about '97. Those are the most accessible years of rap to date, and if you learn to love those (which isn't hard) then you'll learn to love everything that came before AND after those years (including lots of current rap music as well).

          Start with the fucking classics:

          Nas - Illmatic
Notorious BIG - Ready to Die
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
          Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the 36 Chambers
          OC - Word...Life
Outkast - Atliens (and arguably southernplayalisticadillacmuzik)
          Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
          Goodie Mob - Soul Food
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II Tha Pharcyde
Souls of Mischief - '93 'Til Infinity

I could go on... but I'd need my rap directory on my PC at home to do that [or my almost exclusively classic rap CD collection of about 120 discs]

Check out some of these swait singles while you're at it:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

          Wu-Tang Clan C.R.E.A.M. from their debut CD, 36 Chambers.www.eglnradio.net

If you have any ability to enjoy true rap music though, you should at least enjoy all those albums I've listed.

ps where's Mike Lowrey? he ran the rap thread on sufu for ages.

For classics, EPMD's "You Gots to Chill" and Rakim and Eric B were both pretty approachable.

i'd disagree, as somebody who got into rap later in life (like dabbled in grades 5-7 but didn't get into it until university) those artists took a good grounding to appreciate

but if you want to try them out, check out Eric B & Rakim's "Follow the Leader" a bonafide classic album, just might sound like trash to the uninitiated

I think Illmatic is probably the best single album to recommend to someone trying to approach hip-hop. It has elements of everything that's defined the genre. No filler.

i always tell people hip hop was my first love.

and as far as "syntax" (is that the right word for this sentence?) goes, Nas' verse on "Verbal Intercourse" is one of the most brilliantly strung together verses of words ever written.

I'm partial to Mos Def myself. I doesn't get much better than "Hip Hop".

a small selection of essential non-backpack rap mostly from the 90s that's off the pitchfork radar:
