Eh, I'm pretty sure you can have horse leather without being cordovan. Cordovan is only one part of the horse. Maybe hard horse is cordovan?

Yer. fumma seems to know the most about it I think but cordovan is the 'rump' of the horse and it is due to it being such a small area of the hide that they are so much more expensive. Durable as hell though, my augusta cordovan boots were awesome, best leather I've come across, almost bought the wrap augusta thermic awlouie was selling just because the leather is so nice.

The leather that you are describing is called shell cordovan, which is different from cordovan as it is a subcutaneous layer. From the Augusta thread:

Cordovan is simply short for shell cordovan.

Shell cordovan (or cordovan) is a type of leather commonly used in shoemaking. Cordovan is an equine leather made from the fibrous flat muscle (or shell) beneath the hide on the rump of the horse.
