Funny, I do the same. I've never met a scotch drinker that didn't at least like Lagavulin 16, even if it wasn't their favorite. It's also one of my personal favorites.

Lately I've found myself taken with Glenrothes 1985 and 1988. The light smoke is cut by a lingering of dried fruits and honey. I've found it a surprisingly nice change of pace from the more smokey, peaty fare I usually drink.

I've picked a Distillers Edition Talisker for my dad's birthday.

            Like this one: http://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies...finish-whisky/

            Only mine is 1992.

Looking forward to trying it with him, the special Taliskers are usually very good.

Lagavulin 16 is good, super smokey, thats the only Lagavulin I've tried, I like to try the more sherried, richer, possibly more rounded versions.

I'm a rye/bourbon man myself for regular drinking, though I will occasionally enjoy a peaty scotch. In my cabinet now:

                Hudson Manhattan Rye
                Rittenhouse Rye
                Bulleit Bourbon
                Rowan's Creek Bourbon
                Macallan 12

                  Wow

Lots of whiskey drinkers here! Me too, gotta love a good whiskey. I live in the uk - lots of scotch here still finding my favorite.

The Distiller's edition lagavulins aren't more rounded than the regular lagavulin. Sweeter, but it really doesn't show more balance (1991 possibly excepted).

Some of the newer non-Bourbon American whiskeys are really surprisingly good. Not great values for the most part, but fun and different. I've been enjoying some of them.

Lately been drinking some more bourbon and american whiskey. Really liking Elmer T Lee, Russels, and Stranahans

Tonight going to the girlfriend's parent's house though, I keep a bottle of Glenmorangie there.

I should try the Hudson Rye, though I think their products overall are over priced so I steer clear, also, their white is not my thing. I have been loving Rowan's lately too. So vanilla. BTW my favorite white is Death's Door, I think its made with wheat and barley... so much less corn flavor.

The 91 distillers Talisker I got my dad isn't really that much more rounded, slightly tamed ( and has more nuanced flavour for it ) but still a fiery, peaty drink.

Auchentoshan 3 wood us sublime, a few tipsy notes here

Care to post some links to the non-bourbons you mention??

I don't know about Talisker, I was just thinking of Lagavulin. The 1991 was worlds better than their other years of DE.

Off the top of my head, american non-bourbon whiskeys of note are Clear Creek, Saint George, Wasmund's, House Spirits and High West. I'll dig through the notes and such and track down some others.

I love the taste of Jack Daniel's.
                                that makes me insanely happy.
