Robert Geller F/W 10

Like the past couple of Geller seasons, the styling and overall presentation of the show itself leave a bit to be desired, but the individual pieces hold up very well. Outerwear and knits in particular are usually extremely "wearable" across a variety of wardrobes, and other than the terrible zips dude uses, the quality does seem to justify the price. That, and Geller looks like such a nice guy!

I like some of it...........not great, but not bad either.
After speaking to someone in the company a little while back, and understanding the company setup, I have a completely different perspective about his work and the label overall.
I would have wanted to see it in person..........i had an invitation to the show but didn't attend it because of Sabbath observance..........
I am personally happy to see him expanding and doing different things though, even if those things are not as perfect as I would like to see....“You know,” he says, with a resilient smile, “it is a hard world for poets.”

geller's always had the wackest styling in his shows and the tradition continues, i dunno what's up with that. practically a trademark by now
this feels as if the leftovers from the past two collections were incoherently and sloppily put together from which it was then decided to make a runway show. and the end result is whimsical without structure and what looks like robert geller parodying robert geller, stuck in an aesthetic limbo. there's barely any actual conceptual evolution, whatever new he's trying to achieve he's merely scrabbling at.. as merz said about him trying to move away from his past themes and ideas he is still all the while too attached to them to elegantly make that leap to whatever's next. i truly hope he'll manage that.
nevermind this collection, the work he's offered in the past is solid and fw08 still occupies a special place in my heart...

Looking at this at a glance it looks frumpy and uncalculated.
But when I look at the individual pieces, I see a few things.
- Some fantastic proportions, particularly with the pants (my favourite part of this collection).
- Some great coats/jackets, including that gorgeous striped parka (2nd look of post #3)
- Some fantastic scarves and ties (the velvet ties are quite something, lanvin-esque)
- A few unfortunate furry/rug-like pieces
I will seperately say that Robert Geller has possibly the nicest colour choices in all of Fall 2010.

I saw the collection in person and there are some very nice pieces.
Both of these coats are great, probably best he ever did.
Shirts are probably the best ones you can get at these price points. Knits are much better quality than previous seasons (a lot softer than the robo sweaters). Some jeans have zippers on the bottom back of the leg (can't see that in the photos). His leathers are of great quality, although some of the designs might be a little busy. I think the problems with zippers are gone, and their colors suit his style pretty well.
Possibly the styling is a little too much and it often hides a lot of details. I could do completely without the fur pieces or even hats.

Merz, this is exactly it! I was thinking to myself, I wish this was darker like his second winter collection, but then again not everything needs to be "dark" to be acceptable, but Merz nailed why it is necessary here. His romanticism (which I fully appreciate) has been coming off a bit hoaky lately without some kind of edge to it. Ann's recent dark duke collection and this would seem to have a lot in common in terms of inspiration, but there's a world of difference in execution.
If Geller could inject that edge again, whether it's dark/military/goth or just some good ole' modern severity to shave some of the frou frou off his romantic leanings he could easily be the best thing going for menswear at New York Fashion Week.
Anyway, as a shopping guide, I do see a lot to like, his shirts are always nice and casual, I really like the grey jeans and the trench posted above looks ace. My main beef is with the show as an entire presentation and the general aesthetic direction of his last few collections seems misjudged.
Originally posted by merzi suppose i can understand a man's desire to move away from 'doing the same stuff'. what is best to avoid under such circumstances, however, is work that looks like a very conscious effort to 'move away from doing the same stuff' ... and little else to show for it.
romanticism without a certain severity leaves the whole thing looking kind of goofy. there are some wearable pieces underneath it all, but they require undressing, removing some ill-conceived fur (!?) overlays and de-styling. so much for bringing out the best in presentation. err.

I really like a lot of this. The silly fur things to me are just for show and can easily be forgotten; ditch those and a lot of it are great outfits with nicely executed layers and styling. As usual, I really like his use of color mixed with monotone shades. Of course his fabric choices, especially, make things even more special.
My favourites..

I also liked some of it, and was perplexed at the mostly negative reaction, but I can see how the fur pieces and the stripes draw too much attention, therefore distracting from the nicer pieces.Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months - Oscar Wilde
