this is just based on my personal experience from using both platforms, but I never felt the need to root my Android phones as they are highly customizable to begin with, whereas on the iPhone it very difficult to get away from the ways of how the manufacturer wants you to use the phone. not saying one is necessarily better than the other, but for me its all about the usability and customizing/optimizing the platform to my needs, hence why I love Android.

Huge +1, this is also why I love my Macbook Pro for my school work/just browsing the internet as Apple has it setup fantastic for those duties. However when I built a computer to game on, I definitely went with a PC for the customization potential.

I completely agree with both of you. The only reason I'd have to root an android would be to be able to pirate apps. The iphone basically needs to be jailbroken for it to reach it's potential though.

My Android came with a lot of bloatware that cannot be uninstalled and, when it's running all at once, manages to suck a little over half the phone's available memory. Even with an task killer a lot of the programs could forcibly restart themselves. Rooting it was necessary.

Patro-yeah, with my new Bionic I heard that's an issue. I may root it when it comes in Monday to get rid of those, as half the memory being used by non-optional apps is a little absurd.

Sounds strange, I haven't come across this on HTC or Samsung. To my understanding memory management is run automatically by Android's run time, ie its supposed to kill non essential processes to free up memory if needed. sounds like something is wrong with the phone or os if this isn't functioning..?

My phone is an HTC Panache rebranded as a Tmobile MyTouch 4G. The issue is that T-mobile uses a proprietary build of Android with some pointless bloatware hardwired to it.

I miss my old G1, but the Panache smokes it.

Let's not turn this into a iPhone vs. Android battle though. I just think it's silly when people claim I don't want the Android because of a lack of Apps. So what if it's like 200,000 apps versus 70,000. I find 70,000 EASILY exceeds anything I've ever wanted.
Its not so much a lack of apps but there are certainly many quality apps available for the iPhone that are not around for the Droid. And for good reason...in 2010, the App store apparently did $1.7Billion in sales while the Android did $102million. Many game changing apps come out for the iPhone first and later, possibly, get versioned out for other markets. Also, as a developer, who wants to figure out all the fragmentation issues with the Android platform?

One example that comes to mind (because I use the app often) is Siri. Fantastic app that came out and quickly generated hype and subsequently got bought by Apple (will be incorporated into upcoming iPhones). The technology, the most advanced speech recognition stuff I've seen, will never find its way to the Android in its present/forthcoming incarnations.

So I think you are limiting yourself if you just talk technology when choosing your device. I agree with dmash at the end of the day - different strokes for different folks.

iPhone has real security problems though, people working with highly confidential informations are usually given a Blackberry for their job, not an iPhone.

The revenue for apps isn't comparable. Hardly any Android apps cost money, where pretty much every Apple one you do.

There are enterprise class applications for all smart phones to protect confidential data. I find it's more the executives that are demanding iPhones....and execs tend to get what they want.

The iPad is a whole other beast and is rapidly entering the corporate space. It's completely revolutionized the tablet. For those that think this is hype, tell HP that. After sinking 1.8 billion into the palm acquisition and losing upwards of $700 mil over the last three months, they're practically forced to sell or spin off their PSG business.

Problem with Apple in the corporate space is there isn't the IT staff available to support or manage these devices. Apple traditionally has only competed in the K-12 space, graphic design and other niche markets. That makes it difficult for organizations to go out and hire someone reputable to support the technology.

Well, French equivalent of NSA (ANSSI) is litterally hunting down every counselor of our President, to persuade them to give up their iPhone for a Blackberry, and not to use their personal iPad for any kind of sensible purpose (storing notes of a confidential meeting and such). Of course some of them are reluctant...
And when a public worker whose work is strategic and confidential is given a phone for his job, it's always a blackberry, no choice.

I must admit I don't know why, but iPhone and iPad are considered totally unreliable security-wise at this level of confidentiality, by our specialists.

(The ANSSI sometimes also help strategic French firms with their security, and I bet they promote blackberry to their executives as well, at least for every professionnal purpose)
