it irritates the hell out of me when people say "I never use a timer when cooking pasta" as if they're so high and mighty. why put yourself through all that checking and testing, when you can just set the timer and forget about the pasta for however many minutes it takes to cook. I also can't stand it when people make crunchy pasta and call it 'al dente'

I've never used a timer in my life because different types will vary in cooking time, so I'd rather test once or twice than over cook it

There are actually people who cook pasta with a timer?

You have to check it...if you follow the times as found on a packet the result is a soggy mass of carbs!

Here Genevieveryoko, bet you are gonna love me.. not only do I not use a timer... I usually make my own pasta!

I do use a timer however for my boiled eggs, 3.5 mins +/- depending on the size.

I always assumed cooking times on any form of food was a guidance rather than a rule. May just be because I have a rubbish oven and stove, but I tend to go by taste and checking. Although on the flipside I do automatically start counting when I'm stirring something...I like to end on even numbers

i just check what time it is on my phone and then when it's maybe a minute away from what should be the 'right time' i test how far along it is. i have no internal sense at all of how long 10 minutes (or any other amount of time) is so i need a crutch for that.

as a general rule of thumb, I usually set the timer for a minute or two less than the suggested time, then check it every 30 seconds or so after that. I don't have a problem with people not using a timer, I just don't think it makes you it makes you a better or more legit cook so there's no reason to act like it's "the only way". but if I don't set the timer, I will forget about the pasta, only to realize all the water has boiled off and find ginormous, burned, overcooked noodles.

so yeah, I hate all of you except ProfMonnitoff

but I think it's especially important to use a timer when cooking fresh pasta, 30 seconds can make or break your texture...but of course, always underestimate

For what it's worth, this is happening everywhere. In Greece, most shipowners (richest industry) are based either in London or Panama.

Also local shipowners, private educational institutions (also very rich) and casinos (!) get their taxes reduced to 100 grand. Why? Lobbying.

I wish it wasn't as obvious.

Without trying to sound like a dick, America is not Greece. I know, I know, it's also corrupt, government can be bought, etc. etc., but still, the levels of corruption are different.
