    Beanies

As Fuuma requested - the beanie thread.

I also find it hard to find a good one, well, just because it's one of those things that I refuse to pay a lot for - I don't care if it's been buried in the desert [;)]. Yet, naturally, one wants a quality product. So, what's a boy(girl?) to do? What do you have, use?

I've walked away from Rick Owens beanies at $60 in the past - maybe cheap, but it's your mind that sets these thresholds.

I just found one recently on Yoox, and I like it. It was $40, which is basically my top mental price level. It's by a brand called Jan & Carlos, which I can't seem to figure out. Some cool stores carry them, and they seem to work in the artisanal vein, but I honestly don't know anything about them. I just liked the hat. It's well knit, the wool seems to be treated with something, and it's 100% wool, which is a must in my book. Too many hats are made by the likes of Adidas from acryllic, which I hate. On this one, I flip the bottom portion of the hat up, so the ribbing is not so long, and it sits closer to the scalp.

So, what else is out there? I do like what Rick does, when he does it in a good fabric. This Countesse seller, who deals in a lot of Owens has some, but her shipping fees are insane.

I don't like anything too tricky - don't like what CDiem does with the long tail. I would love to see an Ann's interpretation of something so basic. Oh, and this season Margiela has done some nice ones. There is one with a zippered pocket, but it doesn't feel good when wearing it on your head. And I must say I don't like the MMM logo on something so small as a hat or gloves, it makes it overbearing.

Thanks for the thread. I must say I have problems distinguishing interesting details on the Owens auctions. I guess in most casesbeanies are something you must see in person and try on to make up your mind.

c-plus makes a great beanie (japan) its loose gauge, double layered (the inner layer is a little tighter while the outer layer is looser - gives a nice bit of a slouch, but not too much (double layer makes it pretty warm too). i like them better than the grossly overpriced number (n)ine beanies (although they are still nice, and i managed to get one for relatively cheap). i remove the c-plus tag, and it's a nice, simple, plain, beanie. they have a bunch of other styles too.

This may be a bit of a kooky, low-rent response, but I make
them. Hats are easy to knit and don't require much yarn, so you
can splurge on high end fiber (Japanese yarn is predictably amazing,
and there are also plenty of nutso blends like cotton/stainless steel
          to experiment with locally).

As a side note when buying a made
beanie, a bit of nylon will prevent bagging, silk will give it some
sheen and keep it from felting, etc., so don't judge exclusively on
          100% wool content.

label under construction also makes some nice "beanies". depending on how big your head is, the overall look changes a lot. with my big asian head, the top definitely doesn't flop over like that- gives a more of a mohawk-ish look (which looks better than it sounds). this style comes in many different fabrics - wool, cashmere, cotton - and some interesting patterns too.
