well it is not worst than the ethics thread
funny topic though, since i remember i was quite surprised that the grey leather used on the SS11 Julius asymmetrical jacket felt exactly the same as the grey hammered lamb from RO (used for crust).

Leather jackets: Rick Owens vs. Julius

you'd need to feel the ccp leather to personally fell in love with it :p.
personally, I am not into CCp either (except the groil sneakers, and derbies), in term of design.
maybe its a matter of age as well, when you get older, you'd love to simplified your style.

Personally even if I had $5k-$8k to spend on a jacket I wouldn't be buying that, that's just me though..and that's just now. Things are always changing but never really liked any ccp stuff, none of it.
I think Rick makes at least one classic every year, Julius not so much lately and the backs of all of them are basically the same up until last year and now all of these backs are the same. But then again the Rick's all have absurd long arms which looks amazing when hung up but not so rad if you don't have Iverson/Pippen arms. Really get one of each so you have something to fall back on depending on the situation.

This is tough subject. I'm so picky and frankly not ballin' enough to just go out and purchase many leathers but i've looked at a ton of RO and quite a few of the Julius jackets. This just seems a matter of opinion. Both are clearly made well and both use quality materials. Just because they are black and (some) have zippers doesn't make them similar. I mean, Ralph Lauren makes black leather moto jackets...
For me personally, the Julius jackets are a bit too stylized for the way I like to dress. RO feels more toned down to me.
Honestly if you are going to do a throwdown why not go for the gusto? CCP vs the world? Who does it better? Craftmanship, quality of material, design, etc. Overlook the possible fit problems and you are in leather nirvana
Seriously people, lets get some pictures up to liven the debate. I'm still trying to find the perfect leather and i'm open to all thoughts.

Ann's lamb leathers are my personal favorite. The leather is out of this world and the construction is excellent. They smell pretty awesome too.

how do you guys feel about other designer leathers? I like the classic 5 zip margiela, and some damir doma leathers.

Well, now we're at it, what about Obscur's offerings? I know they're pretty popular in here, so people must have some experience with them by now. I'm not much into the style, but what about the quality compared to RO and Julius, and how are the prices?

perhaps we should expand this thread to just be "leather jackets".
as much as i <3 dick and horikawa-san, i'm a bit less than impressed with recent leather offerings from both. newer lulius ain't what it used to be, even relative to the legendary f/w 09 rider, the horizontal seams, multiple zippers, and overdone cowl-necks are awkward on almost anyone, not to mention the thinner and less intensely treated and finished leather. similarly, newer rick stuff feels a bit overdone relative to simpler, perhaps sharper, designs (stooges, bomber, etc).
i don't think there's a universal way to judge leather quality, but (based on my own experience with dick, julius, more, etc) i wouldn't say either of these is anywhere reaching superior, on almost any scheme of evaluation. on the one hand, i'd say obviously sissyp with his specialized techniques achieves something unique and compelling, if rather uncomfortable and sometimes oddly fitting. on the other, my old made in france slimane leathers just feel awesome to wear and touch, and it annoys me to no end to see kva's bland, lame designs squandering such material and technique (though i'm sure saying so will be met with howls of disapproval).
hence, i've been looking for a nice summer leather for a while now, and i can't seem to find much really inspiring or interesting. and it seems from this thread a few of us, at least, feel the same way.

I can't speak for R.O. leathers, but the Julius F/W 09 Rider jacket in lamb leather that I own has a very substantial feel and thickness/stiffness that I haven't seen with other labels. Definitely not a delicate leather by any means and the washing and distressing on the jacket is insane.
In the end, I feel it all comes down to the aesthetic you're looking for and how comfortable you are wearing the particular styles that each designer has to offer. As others have already said, these two labels cater to slightly different crowds in terms of their overall styling, fit, and details. If you want a more sporty/futuristic/minimalist leather, then go for Rick. If you want a more goth/industrial/embellished leather, then go for Julius. With the price points being relatively the same for the two, quality of leather will be secondary to what best fits your wardrobe (and that's not to say that either label's quality and craftsmanship is sub-par).

my thought is they aren't comparable
so we can't compare them, its a matter of taste, on what's beautiful. (like recent discussion in WAYwT thread),
However, if we look only from the leather quality, I'll go with Rick Owens, construction?, Julius_7.
I wish they merge and create Rick owens_7. haha.
being ask which one I'd buy, I'd buy both.
because they both can give a different aesthetic on me.

I got a lot more compliments on my old Julius but never felt comfortable in it as much as the current Bauhaus that I love to death. I know I'm getting into a bit more of a subjective argument that the OP intended though.

Julius never seems to look as good IRL as in photos. RO fits my 13 inch drop a lot better.
