Archive Guidelines - IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ!

    Dear SZers,

Welcome to The Garment Archives Project. As many of you know, there is often a dearth of clear images of the garments out there, especially from those designers who operated in the pre-Internet era. I would like us to change this. Many of us have wonderful garments in our closets, many of them rare. I want us to make a collective effort to share images of them, as well as information pertaining to their provenance. This project will allow us to create something that is unprecedented on the Internet and hitherto has been mostly reserved or outsourced to fashion departments of museums – a comprehensive garment archive. I ask all of you to contribute in this collective effort, and I encourage you to go far and wide in terms of designers you want to see here. Let’s make this something we can be proud of!

    Forum Structure and Posting Guidelines:

    • Each designer will have his/her own thread. The threads will have to be created by one of the moderators, because of the specific nature of the posts. If you don’t see a specific designer thread, please PM me, lowrey, or Avantster, and we will add it. Anyone can create individual posts.
    • The nature of the posts is structured. Please take care to include the details specified in the instructions below.
    • In order to prevent any loss of images, please use the attachments function to attach photos
    • Please make an effort to take clear pictures, and no more than 4 photos per garment. Front and back are mandatory, and maybe 1 or 2 detail shots, if you feel they are important.
    • Please do not post any comments. This forum is for information/archival purposes only.

    HOW TO POST

to post an entry, reply to the respective thread and enter the following information, preferably in this order:

    label/designer
    item name / details
    gender and season
    material
    made in

    short additional notes/details

please note that it is important to enter the label or designer name as it will help in searching the archives!

to enter pictures, click either "manage attachments" below the text box or the paperclip button above it. Select 1-4 images from your computer (or enter their url's) and click upload.

wait for the window to refresh, just close it and once you reply, the images should appear below the post.

    IMAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Please consider the quality of pictures when posting - the images should give a clear picture of the garment and its details. No flash filled, poor quality shots or shabby, upside down cellphone pics.

the maximum size for images is 640 wide and 670 high. the maximum file size is 300kb, but we encourage you to resize the image to roughly 100kb as this usually is substantial in quality but doesn't take as much space.

to watermark images, download the watermark image in PSD format here. (coming)

HOW TO SEARCH FOR A GARMENT

if you are looking for pictures of a specific item from a long thread, this is the best way to search:

click search from the top of the forum > advanced search
keywords: designer name and item name (for example, "ann demeulemeester coat")
    "search entire posts" selected
    Show results as: Posts
Search in Forum(s): select The Garment Archives

please note that we don't have time to babysit every single post here, if the entries don't meet the guidelines, they will simply be removed.

      this includes inadequate information:

      - photos that are unclear, don't show the full garment or are hosted elsewhere

      - details that don't include for example the designer name or garment type
