    Enfants Riches Déprimés

Enfants Riches Déprimés, which translates to "rich, depressed kids" was founded in 2012 by "artist" and former UCLA Art School drop out Henri 'Alexander' Levy, he explains his brand as "elitist, nihilist couture." Henry had the idea to create a French punk streetwear line based on the movements of the late 1970s and Japanese avant-garde movements of the 1980s. He makes heavily hand-distressed t-shirts with bootlegged logos, custom punk studded leather jackets, and even a cashmere noose just to name some of his "works;" all of these in extremely scarce amounts. Some of his more controversial designs include a Columbine knitted sweater, a sweater / t-shirt of a Nazi Mickie Mouse bending over a groupie Minnie Mouse, and the 1/1 Porn Shirt on Grailed. As a fan of this brand for some time, I was rather puzzled when I could not find a thread here. After continuous reading and self-educating, I've become well aware of the copious amounts of knowledge possessed by my fellow SZ users. Everyone has an opinion, and I am guessing many have negative opinions on this brand, which may be why there is no thread. To continue, in my opinion, Henri is a total scumbag. He really encompasses the meaning of his brand, he is a spoiled little bitch. A few years ago he was confronted on social media about stealing the album artwork for his Lou Reed sweater and responded like an immature child, it's so bad I refuse to look it up. That being said, I think his brand is important. It gives people like Henri a chance to express themselves when previously they have felt unable to. He says he designs clothes for himself, but it's becoming more and more obvious that people are buying his clothes, even at their cringeworthy prices. His marketing knowledge is commendable and has been improving since 2015 with the growth of ERD stockists. To close my point on the topic, I like his work but I do not consider Henri a designer nor an artist... I honestly don't know what I would consider him. Some of his pieces are extremely powerful, up for interpretation, and mysterious and personally that gives me a sense of comfort with this brand. Finally, what do you think of this brand? Any and all comments would be appreciated.

Alright, I have a rather interesting topic to discuss in regards to this brand. How the fuck can you still blatantly steal ideas from massive companies? The Mercedes jacket as provided above by Law, they have a Parliament T-shirt, and I mentioned in my initial writing how Henri stole Lou Reed's 'Transformer' album artwork for a sweater. I HATE plagiarism, and any theft of ideas and with ERD the theft is endless. This is what kills my soul in fashion, truly. Interpret that however you wish, I am young and inexperienced; however, I just really like to see true creativity. Not gonna get too deep, I realize inspiration and creativity are different and it can be argued that everything is inspired by something. I have another topic to discuss and this was the interesting topic I mentioned earlier... perhaps this should be its own thread and perhaps I shouldn't even be asking this but I feel as if some people think theres a certain 'aesthetic' in wearing depressing, controversial, and arguably cancerous garments like the ones Henri makes. Graduating high school only a few years ago, I genuinely got the vibe that people thought it was cool to be depressed, to suffer, or to at least portray yourself like that on social media. That stupid fucking Travis Scott "look down at the floor" glance, or some kid in an oversized hoodie hand over his face. Or the NAV "numb to all pain, take your bitch" bullshit. What is this lol? Am I the only one noticing this? This is partially coming from hip hop, there's no questions, however it is interesting the sheer lack of individuality of people. EVERYBODY in my high school was a sheep, a follower. These are not people in our community, they're conformists trying to cling onto some cool 'aesthetic.' The reason I bring this up is because I believe this may be one of the reasons why ERD still sells, it caters towards the kids on Instagram who take fit pictures to impress the masses. Not to mention the appearances Migos and Future have made in ERD (Henri made sure he posted these photos on the ERD Instagram).

This may be an unpopular opinion but I actually really like ERD but I am partially biased because I was friends with Henri as a teen. One of the hoodies he made entitled "Teen Wilderness" is a pretty popular item in one of his early collections and I actually went to the teen wilderness program with Henri that inspired that piece. Now although I do like the label I don't deny he hasn't stolen designs (His secretary kiss button up is practically a replica of the Margiela lipstick button up) and the prices are insanely high for what the items are for the most part. Some of the hand distressed items are very intricate and may very well justify the price. I think some of the pieces are classic like the not overly done leather jackets or velour trucker jackets and pants for instance. The aesthetic fits my personal style pretty well even though it is more hardcore than say Hedi or Rick even at times. Henri himself said that he wanted to create a "punk Hermes" and there really wasn't too much of a punk influence in luxury brands maybe minus some archive Raf and Rick pieces. His footwear also adds a nice element to the brand like a made in Italy Doc Marten. I can obviously see why many don't like it but to be fair it is sort of niche and not for most people. I try to look for the more timeless pieces and judging based on that rather than the obvious attention grabbers. IMO this last collection seemed better than past and I am both curios and excited to see the progression or lack of in the near future.
