Cocteau Twins - Victorialand (or maybe Treasure, shuffle makes this difficult to remember)

This Mortal Coil - Filigree & Shadow

My new years resolution was to listen to newer and happier music.

        Magik Markers, "Boss".

I still can't get over how much of a departure this is from their live show.

wow, how is that magik markers record? i heard they almost wrote songs or something along those lines. did they change it up once one of the members left? i remember seeing them play a while ago and was pretty stoked on how improvised it was. the first record on ecstatic peace is pretty dope.

Boss is a great album, but it's a pretty significant departure from the Markers' live show. There are proper song structures; it's almost poppy.

[quote user="merz"]i'm not familiar with magik markers, xadam, but which album would i look for as a difinitive example of what their earlier, less structured work was like?

The deal with the Markers is that they are (were) essentially an improv band, so a recording kind of misses the point. "A Panegyric to the Things I Do Not Understand" and "I Trust My Guitar, etc" both capture the more spastic side of the band. But, do check out the new record too -- it's incredible, but in a different way from their live shows.

Funny Codeine story: their drummer Doug Scharin was crazy prolific in the mid-90's. I was at a show for one of his many bands, Rex, in like 97. While Rex were setting up the sound guy (who may have been Bob Weston) played a medley of Doug Scharin bands (Jo44, HiM, Loftus, Codeine) over the PA. Once Doug realized what was going on, he started playing along.

Currently listening: Shooting Spires (Parts+Labor side project)

Yeah. I'm a little bit worried that 1995 was when music peaked for me, what with Jo44's "Engine", Hoover's "Lurid Traversal", and Unwound's "New Plastic Ideas". I sort of have the same fears about 2004 and men's fashion.

i hear what you're saying. there really hasn't been too many exciting rock bands coming out as of late for a while, but i haven't been seeking out new music like i did last year. of the new breed, pissed jeans and battles are pretty good.
