Could anyone recommend good 20th/21st century scandinavian/icelandic literature?
"He described this initial impetus as like discovering that they both were looking at the same intriguing specific tropical fish, with attempts to understand it leading to a huge ferocious formalism he characterizes as a shark that leapt out of the tank."

Whatever you think someone who reads lovecraft, borges, continental philosophy, huysmans, bataille, lispector, mann etc.. would like.

              ‪Pär Lagerkvist‬ - The Dwarf

‪Vilhelm Ekelund‬ - (maybe too hard to find in English)

              August Strindberg - Alone

              Harry Martinson- Aimless Journeys

Björn Larsson - Dreams by the sea

Maybe you would like some of it.

"I have noticed that sometimes I frighten people; what they really fear is themselves. They think it is I who scare them, but it is the dwarf within them, the ape-faced manlike being who sticks up his head from the depths of their souls."

stig dagerman is probably the best 20th century swedish author. I particularly recomment "a burnt child" and "german autumn".

Speaking of Swedish authors, I'm reading My Life as a Dog by Reidar Jonsson -- thoroughly enjoyable (As an aside, if you haven't seen the movie, I'd recommend it, but the book seems a more natural expression even when translated.)

lol. if you haven't already read lispector, you should - she eats a cockroach in a mystical rapture in one of her books.

maybe a bit earlier, but knut hamsun's 'pan' (1894) is very good and in my opinion superior to his much more famous novel 'hunger'.
