I was just wondering what you meant since I couldn't see any info on how it was built, so its hard to say what it's ecological effects are. Considering its in a moat, I think "worst idea ever" is a bit exaggarating

You're right, it was exaggerated, but it's not about how it's built, it's about how it interacts with the environment.

It's indeed in a moat, so it's not that important, but that "bridge" translates a total lack of reflexion and concerns about the insertion in the land. That's a good example of an outdated architecture, where design and will to impress are prevailing.

I realize this has even been touched upon in this thread, but what would be a good primer for a complete novice to architecture? Would love to be able to have a deeper understanding than being able to distinguish the most well-known styles

^ well, that's a difficult question to answer. i honestly don't know where to start... but reading about le Corbusier and the modernist movement might be a good first step. after all he is one of the most important figures in the history of architecture and the principles he has laid out as well as his practical way of thinking about how structures are inhabited have influenced a huge amount of architects ever since.
the Bauhaus movement/school is also a touchstone (and is linked to the modernist movement anyway).

              The Integral House by Shim-Sutcliffe

one of the most beautiful projects i've seen in years... reminiscent of the 'old ways' and the 'old masters', especially Alvar Aalto... this is what Architecture should be... with every detail well-considered and crafted... the Integral House by Shim-Sutcliffe:

This is awesome. Makes me think how far Straf was ahead of its time.

Wow, the Waterhouse looks amazing. The bare walls really make an impact. I wonder if they left the walls as they were originally or if they actually treated them in some way. Not sure about the tub surrounded by glass though, right next to the bed...
