    Re: An Experiment in Jewelry

Yesterday I went to the lab to get the casting done, turns out I have no clue what I'm doing. I am going again this weekend but this time with someone that knows how to use the various machinery and can show me the process.

[quote user="Who?"]Kira- you're a wealth of info. If I don't have access to a kiln is there anything I can use as a substitute firing source or do I have to go to the local college and beg to use the kiln?

you can not reach those temps needed without some type of kiln unfortunately, or concentrated energy source. there are really small jewelry electric kilns as stated elsewhere here that would be good...or begging the local ceramics dept works as well. but you should be able to find small kilns that are not expensive. look for kilns called test kilns.

With the Pmc stuff, could you mould a chain linked together out of the stuff then heat it to have a seamless chain? Or would it stick together, I'm trying to gauge the consistency of it. Looks fun.

It would hard as hell to make a chain with the pmc. Real talk.

So... I screwed the pooch on this one. The casting processes is nothing like I thought, there is no mold created so there is no chance for reproduction, which makes the piece I had in mind far too time consuming to create. I cannot make anything larger that a cubic inch and the item needs to be thin other wise the metal will become pitted, porous and weak during the casting. I am going to scrap the process until I find better wax for this smaller scale.[70]
