    On a more political note:

This is a must-see series that shows us in a most painfully intimate way the tension between the local (physical labor, migration) and global (finance capital, magnetic nodes of production). From Al-Jazeera

I watched all the segments in quick succession but found the one that featured sulfur "mules" in Java especially haunting. This segment is aptly titled Ghosts.

"To articulate what is past does not mean to recognize 'how it really was.'
It means to take control of a memory, as it flashes in a moment of danger."

Great posts MBD. Both topics hit a nerve with me. I knew the ghosts documentary already, but i'm glad you posted the krautock videos. They manage to explain that this music could only be created in the special climate the was post-war Germany, nothing that is global or isolated from the environment like most of todays music.

If you've ever wondered what overthrowing a government might look like, here's your chance to witness an actual coup d'état going down, captured by sheer "luck" from the moment it began.

Unlike most political docs, this isn't a re-telling of historic events by the typical pairing of old news reels juxtaposed with new-ish interviews. It's primarily raw footage of hell breaking loose, captured from quite literally the vantage point of behind the intended target's shoulder – Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez.

What's remarkable here is that the only reason it exists is because a TV crew from Ireland happened to be spending that day filming at the presidential palace for a small documentary they'd been in the country making. What they ended up captured was an accurate account of history in the making, that would have otherwise been spun to kingdom come by various opposion, as history usually is.

Can anyone recommend some good fashion or designer documentaries?
I've recently watched notebook on cities and clothes and loved it.

( Documentary: Rick, Michele, and Scarlett – about the relationship of Rick Owens & Michele Lamy )
Would have totally gone had I known about it. So close to my place, too. Grrr..
A quick online search just now revealed 2 things (both kinda crummy):

                1. It's not showing anywhere in NYC, now that the premiere has come & gone, and
                2. TimeOut NewYork magazine (online version), had NO idea who Scarlett was . . . (fucking Google it, idiots!) – and foolishly admit it HERE. Dimwits..

From his work in the fiction mode to documentary to installation, German filmmaker Harun Farocki (VIDEOGRAMS OF A REVOLUTION) has consistently explored ideas of language, ideology, perception, and contemporary audio-visual culture.Everyone has experienced the stress of interviewing for a job; many have endured the strain of being unemployed. In this unique documentary, Farocki draws on the anxiety of unemployment as he follows the efforts of several candidates who take part in a training program designed to teach them how to apply for a job. The goal is to learn how to market and sell themselves, a goal that Farocki exposes as demeaning and superficial. An insightful look at the manipulative tactics of big business, THE INTERVIEW is as thought-provoking as it is revealing.

A must see, fashion or not.

Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months - Oscar Wilde

wim wenders's documentary on yohji yamamoto back in 89. odd filming style, but its wim wenders, and its mainly just yohji's thoughts on cities and fashion, the man is just so brilliant.
