I prefer an open plan but my house was built in 38 and everything is separate and not particularly maleable in terms of reconfiguration.

yeah i think it was a factory converted to a loft.

also, the bare white walls and ceilings need some type of treatment. it's like you have all this old antique-stuff going on which is nice, but the walls and ceilings belong to a new renovation.

i don't know if they have them in paris, but i'd love to see tin ceilings and maybe dark planks of salvaged wood installed to the walls. or even new wood that has been charred on the surface..

Regarding the walls, I think the white looks good, it exposes the detailed furniture, if the walls had any darker wood as endersgame suggested it wouldnt give such a nice contrast between the plain walls and darkish furniture in my opinion. Maybe some light color spatolato?

        And for not making another post, a quick question;
What are these glass jar-turned upside down things (excuse my ignorance). Just like the one fadetogrey has on windowsill ?

        Thanks.

          Severe heart attack

@endersgame : At first, I thought that you were kidding.
"Isolated kitchen" ??? OMG, if I had wanted something like this, I wouldn't have bought such a space and built it like this. When we got it, the space was absolutely empty : no walls, no electricty, no plumbing, no sanitaries, nothing.

We designed the space and I built everything myself, from ground to ceiling. So the space is exactly what we wanted it to be - and we can't stand separated spaces.

"Odors" ? There's an extractor hood, and what I cook smells good, so no problem.
"Noise" ? The washing machine is absolutely silent. Or was, actually, since it's now out of order. So no more noise at all.

The walls are not white, actually, but of a very irregular and dirty greyish/blueish white. I kept them in their original state, only polished them to remove the water and fire stains, since a part of the factory had burnt.

"Wood on the walls" ? No thanks. But if you have further advices, I'll listen to them carefully and do my best to avoid to cross your way, if you happen by chance to be an interior architect.

@Matis : Sorry, I can't see what you're referring to in the pics.

even if you won't listen to my comments, i just want to add one more thing. i think building the kitchen facing the wall was not the best choice. you're not taking advantage of all that luxurious space you have. if the sink-stove-countertop was facing the room, you get a separation of kitchen and living areas, but still maintaining the openness you want. this way you can entertain guests by serving them over a counter and not have to turn your back against them, and plus you get to see all the natural light and space you paid for.

well i'm glad you have a good air extractor, because i won't hesitate to order kippers for breakfast..

Same story : the counter (we call it "bar américain", and it's a gimmick that you'll find in each and every so called open space) would have closed the space. Some of our neighbours did it, we did not.
In the beginning we didn't even put the piece of furniture that you can see now, perpendicular to the wall, but we needed some storage space.

No problem of light neither, since light is coming as well from the left side when you're facing the wall, cooking, through a big window and the entry door, which is made of glass.

Thanks, wire.artist, even though it's actually an amateur job. No true architect, you know it, would have done this, but we wanted to do all by ourselves.

I didn't know his own space, looks a bit more orthogonal that what he did for others.
Could not fnd the picture with the projected building seated on two or three very thin stilts, which is one of my favourite of his.

Yes, did everything, with the help of my father in the begining, then alone : screed, plumbing, electricity, walls, coating, painting, wood floor, and a part of the furniture, etc.

Wow, all these amazing open-plan loft-style spaces are making me feel a little inadequate... I live in a narrowboat - 60ft long by 7ft wide - on a river in the East end of London. It's small and you won't find any exposed beams etc, but at least we have lots of outside space (we're moored up on Hackney Marshes at the moment). I'll find a pic later
