The great Italian couturiers
Ferre was one of my favorites back in the day. He never seemed to get past the architectural style that marked him solidly in the 80s, but that doesn't discount the incredible mastery he had over his ouvre. Versace in the late 80s echoed some of that sharpness and pattern-making skill (especially in his origami phase) before he turned into the high-end International Male designer shortly before his death, but he never surpassed Ferré at his own game. Valentino has maintained his glamour all to the point of his retirement, and Val's main advantage is his softer, less outré style adapted better to the times. It's too bad Ferré never made a comeback once others took the spotlight. Nobody did a white shirt and skirt combo the way Gianfranco did...
