Thought this womenswear designer would be appreciated by a few here. His collections are based around a certain nostalgia, reconstructing memories of certain garments and breathing life into antique materials from the 19th century. His work with lace and leather is also something to behold. All garments are hand produced in his atelier in Paris.
The designer/artisan Katsuhiro MAKINO (1977-) was born in Japan.
Makino studied at Bunka Fashion College from 1996 to 2000. During his studies in Tokyo, he won many prizes, and one of them offer him one-year study at Ecole de la Chambre Syndical de la Couture Parisienne. Being registered in the last year, he received Grand Prix in the graduation show. After his graduation, he did an internship in the design team of Sonia Rykiel, and then, in 2003, he founded his own label "Aski Kataski" in Paris.
His creation is based on the nostalgia for his childhood that he spent in an old house surrounded by green near the sea. Using antique materials and commonplace garments from 19th century to 1940's, he reconstitutes memories of cloths/clothing as well as his memory itself.
The name of the label derives from an incantation "Aski-kataski-haix-tetrax-damnameneus-aision" which means "darkness, light, earth, sun, and truth". As ancient priests used to recite these words to protect people from devils, Makino hopes his creation becomes a talisman of people who wear his clothes.
