It's a personal interest and one that seems to be occasionally shared across the board whether it's Aitor Throups' sketches or Merz' occasional ruminations and references to obscure russian storytellers.
I always start out with one of my favorite contemporary illustrators whose context I somewhat compare to Rick Owens (for your sz'ers) - not now necessarily critically or historically important but in terms of execution, conception and idea is operating on the highest of levels. I picked two images from Sam Weber's site.
Much more painterly and slightly more abstract - borderline fine art and portraiture but that still maintains a high degree of story.
Then this one that's just kind of fucking cool.
I wanted to talk about Fechin but I can't find a good image so I'll just stick that in later when I get around to the classic american illustrators i love so much.
