I know you can mirror nature on a more structural level and get to minimalism, and I like that too

but I agree Art Nouveau is kind of gay and old lady, although I don't see it as a bad thing per se

He is. Or was. There are always artists who are so great and individual that they stand beside a genre or style they are usually associated with.

Strangely the first artists I am thinking of now are Joy Division.

Yes, exactly. They may have started it, but certainly are not goth. Returning to architecture, Gaudis buildings have a gothic touch, in the post-JD kind of way.

Funnily enough I taught Ornament and Crime today, where Loos really rips into the whole movement (and van der Velde in particular).

Good to mention van de Velde here. If he would not have left Germany because of political pressure he could have been the first Bauhaus director instead of Gropius. So he is the direct link between Art Nouveau and Bauhaus/ modern architecture/ international style . The lack of ornaments in his buildings already suggests what came later.
