In a move towards greater transparency, Steam has introduced new guidelines requiring game developers to disclose the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their games. The update, reflected in the Content Survey that developers complete when submitting their games to the platform, now includes a dedicated AI disclosure section.
Developers are mandated to elucidate how AI is employed in both the development and execution phases of their games, with a distinction made between pre-generated and live-generated AI use. Pre-generated AI use encompasses content, such as art, code, and sound, created during development with AI tools. Valve, during its pre-release review, will evaluate AI-generated content alongside non-AI content. Developers are also subject to Steam's Distribution Agreement, ensuring compliance with guidelines on illegal or infringing content and adherence to marketing materials.
For live-generated content, which involves AI tools during gameplay, developers must adhere to the same rules as pre-generated AI use, with an additional requirement. They are now obligated to describe in the Content Survey the measures in place to prevent the AI from generating illegal content during active gameplay.
To further reinforce these measures, Steam is introducing a reporting system, allowing players to easily report any illegal content encountered while playing games with live-generated AI elements. This reporting system will be seamlessly integrated as an in-game overlay, empowering players to report issues that may have bypassed the developer's implemented safeguards for live-generated AI content.
