Yamamoto protege debuts stoic new line

    By MARTIN WEBB

    Special to The Japan Times

While his daughter Limi prepares to present her Limi
Feu line at the Paris collections for the first time in October, Yohji
Yamamoto has selected another protege to take her place on the Tokyo
    runways.

Michiko Suzuki joined the Japanese fashion maestro's
firm as a pattern-cutter shortly after graduating from Bunka Fashion
College in 2000, and five years later was appointed as the designer of
a new brand called Y's Red Label.

Until last week, when she staged her first catwalk
show at the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery (right), Suzuki had remained
anonymous, but with this dark show combining military-inspired pieces
with bridal veils and train skirts, she has stepped into the limelight.

Asked to explain the theme of the show, titled "Just
Married," Suzuki said that because of the perpetual biannual cycle that
rules the fashion world, this debut symbolized a till-death-do-us-part
    vow to the new brand.

Damn, that's quite a commitment on her part. I hope she doesn't perform hara-kiri if the brand folds [:O].... Just kidding! :-)

It's hard to say from the few pictures, but I also like the last dress.

It's so cool that Yamamoto is promoting his staffs, after Miyake and Kawakubo.

i like it, still feels like Y's to me with a younger take on the Yohji silhouette. A refreshing change of pace after the disappointing past 2 seasons. Will she be in charge of menswear as well? Would like to see that presentation.

Oh MY im impressed :D, this looks like a sampler to an array of cuts and masterful skill that she seems to have honed over the 5 years at yohji...definitely someone to watch..Something fresh, but its overall appeal is quintessentially yohji, so i must say she has worked extremely well within those parameters.

Very 'yohji/japanese school of thought' - obviously.. but what im trying to say is that while this is nothing groundbreaking as a whole new look, its the proportion play, cutting and choice of colour that gives this collection the 'freshness' that i mentioned earlier.

and she looks adorable in those baggy red pants :D

    Well said. This is wonderful.

This is exactly what I was thinking! [73] I really can't say enough about how incredibly impressed I am with this....every piece is so good!

I bought a jacket from this line not long ago (in a moment of joyful and unbridled insanity [:$]). After I tried it on, I found it impossible to let go. The fit and cut is absolutely impeccable...exactly what I would expect from Yohji. But it's younger, punkier, more "spicy" as runner has been saying. He has a beautiful description of the concept behind Red Label at tfs. [64] You can read it here, it's post #12. Faust, I hope you don't mind the linking, but he really explains it so well.

I'm actually finding this whole season very exciting....a few outstanding shows in New York and in Tokyo, and Paris promises to be better than ever. I can't wait for Limi!

I don't mind - it's the tFS police you should watch out for [74].

So, I think this explains our love for the Y's line at IF - it had red labels! No wonder it looked different.

What is this jacket you bought?! Fess up!!!

oh god....ok....confession is good for the soul, i guess.

It's black, one-button, very slim cut but not tight. Instead of a lapel, it has a piece of attached fabric, which is cut in such a way that it looks like a lapel on one side, and a long scarf on the other. The fit is *superb*. In all fairness, I have been wanting a black jacket for a long time, and because of my size, it's difficult to find something with perfect proportions. [:$]

Anyway..yeah...I have completely lost my mind....good thing we are having lunch tomorrow. I need to step away from the Yohji. [^o)]

hmm, looks like this might have been a double message!

    Coming Soon

Yohji Yamamoto targets the casual crowd

    Friday, January 04, 2008

(NEW YORK) Paris Men's Fashion Week is gearing up to be as exciting off the runway as it is on.

    Yohji Yamamoto
will launch Coming Soon, a new super casual collection comprised of
clothing and accessories aimed at both men and women in the younger
consumer demographic. Having signed a 10-year licensing deal with Sinv
S.p.A. to manufacture and market the line worldwide through its own
showrooms and distribution network, the pieces will forego Yamamoto's
signature label. According to the Japanese design icon, the idea is to
create one's own stylistic message through the benefit of anonymity.

    Coming
Soon will hit stores starting in July. According to Yamamoto chief
executive officer Keizo Tamoto, 10-year projected sales figures are
expected to be more than 200 million Euros, or close to $300 million
with distribution divided between Europe (60%), Asia (30%), and the
    U.S. (10%).

I think this is regular Y's stuff, but I don't remember seeing another thread for it.
