I feel like a lot of the first world guilt/privilege dodging/mansplaining would be largely absent on other fashion forums, which I think is part of SZ's unique charm. Marx is getting tossed around every third comment. Rousseau was mentioned. A lot of people seem to feel the need to contextualize and justify their purchases.

Suzanne sounds like he/she doesnt live beyond his/her means, maybe some should take note? Honestly, though im not here to change peoples way of thinking but as someone in my 20s i decided to drastically reduce the size of my wardrobe. Especially since i was neglecting things like debt from school. Plus, ive realized i could allocate money into things that give me continual pleasure over the momentary enjoyment i get from a clothing purchase.

Man, what ever happend to the hustle...
All you "broke ass" college kids should be slapped up a little bit. No there's no hate here. But then again, I know you're anxious for your balls to drop, but those things take time...
When you put a monetary value on something it cheapens it's worth...
When I wanted to buy records, I got a job at a record store
When I wanted to play music, I began to listen
When I wanted to buy clothing, I worked at a boutique
When I wanted to go to Paris, I watched Godard and listened to Gainsbourg
When I wanted to buy art, I befriended the artist
When I wanted to meet girls, I bought a camera
There's a way to live your life where you learn that it's less about what you acquire and more about what you give away.
If you think SZ is just a forum about 'where to kop' and 'waywt' than you're missing the whole point of the zeitgeist.Last edited by fncyths; 01-28-2013, 08:52 PM.Originally posted by Shucksit's like cocaine, only heavier. and legal.Originally posted by interest1I don't live in the past. As a full time broke-ass student, I can absolutely relate to this topic.
Until a few months ago, every time I paid a visit to my beloved realms of SZ I caught myself in an act of self-pitying for not being able to afford 99% of the garments and boots and belts and gloves that I so much adore. But at the same time I've always had that feeling of guilt for thinking that way b/c I knew that there were a lot of people around me that could afford far less than me and that didn't worry about all the clothes they can't afford, but much more about how to pay their rent for next month.
Plus - having to save up for a leather jacket or a pair of boots for a year or more raises my personal appreciation and the value the item has for me into the immeasurable."Things you own, end up owning you." --- Tyler Durden [FightClub 1999]

great words to awaken us broke ass college kids.
When i watched Fight Club, some memorable quotes such as
"Things you own, end up owning you"
"What are we then? Right. We are consumers. We're the bi-products of a lifestyle obsession."
"[xxxx] is making us working our ass off so we can buy shit we don't need"
really touched my mind in some places.
Yet for our generation, we all have the same general weakness that we aren't not able to "act" upon the values/ideas we have in our mind.
Generally, we talk a good game but we never do shit.Last edited by qazwsx; 01-28-2013, 05:04 PM."Things you own, end up owning you." --- Tyler Durden [FightClub 1999]

Again what is with this "grown-ups" hating on young people?
I wanted to go to OCAD and live downtown, I worked my ass off keep my marks up to get high scholarships and bursaries, however there isn't funding so I still have a large student debt.
I wanted to work in fashion, I made connections worked for magazines, got to into the crowd based on precedence not my shopping ability.
I work my ass of to finish a thesis that has me graduate top 5 out of a graduating class of 155, that gets me attention and freelance work.
I use freelance work to support my personal work, which has gotten me recognition all over, collaborating with people I idolized through school.
I am in the now working while I continue to build a thesis for when I apply to masters programs next year after working a year to pay of some debt.
This whole, kids are just whiny, unethical, unmotivated, privileged brats is a very narrow and unfair. Despite my work I am still in debt and won't be able to afford this clothes for quite a while, I know that. I bet that my hard work will one day work out for me, I just need to be patient. However, sometimes I do think it would be nice to actually own some Rick or Yohji, or any work by people I admire.
