This just sucks and makes me cry. I love the races and last year even won the Trifecta for the Belmont stakes. but this is just so painful...</p>

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- With heart and determination, Eight Belles ran the race of her life in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. But just after crossing the wire second behind Big Brown, Eight Belles, the only filly in the race, collapsed after breaking her front ankles. She was euthanized on the racetrack.

"There was no way to save her," said her trainer, Larry Jones. "She couldn't stand. There was no way to even think about trying to save her."</p>

"You don't know why it happened," Jones said "She ran a whale of a race, the race of her life. She ran great. I didn't see the replay, but she apparently got beat by a horse who is as good as Mr. Dutrow said he is. I know she was easily second."</p>

it just breaks my heart. truly [:$] i have been following the triple crown for some years now- that is how i won last year at the Belmont Stakes because it was the unexpected female and the other two were logical placements afterwards. it is just so hard to see or hear about something like this because you know the jockeys love the horses and try so hard and the owners love the horses and the horses try so hard. it is like this insurmountable feat, especially for a filly and you hope that she wins, you want to have that happy ending. you dont want to see the breakdown and not like that and not that immediate. ugh.

NDF, another approach is to work with iron filings and then let it actually rust into the fabric itself instead of working with the iron oxide directly. Of course it's a bit less controllable but the resulting "stain" may be more tenacious at least you know?</P>
