A piece from Allen Williams, who is quickly becoming my favorite artist.
He's also the creature designer for Pacific Rim.

OH I adore Nicola Samorì's paintings! Elegantly harrowing.
some do it fast, some do it better in smaller amounts.

Great to see Samorì getting some love here!
I recently saw an exhibition of his in Modena.
His "decomposing painting" series is very compelling (at times even unsettling)

Study after Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X(1953) Francis Bacon

Talking about Francis Bacon, during the 50s and early 60s he did several studies after one of the most striking papal portraits I have ever come across. This I think is important in how this portrait is pursued today. The striking part is not because of the popes unique personality, his inhumaness, the combination of heroic power and corruption, but because of the opposite of uniqueness: Of what he has in common with other human beings. The human condition. How Velázquez ever got away with this is interesting.

Framcis Bacon is certainly one of my favorite artist. I love, not only this piece based on the pope, but a lot of the other portraits he made because they were so raw and beautiful despite the dark nature.

You guys familiar with the idea that Francis bacon may have been Shakespeare ?

Yeah, we briefed on that theory in a lit course I took. Not the same Francis Bacon though, of course. This guy was a baron and there's a lot of evidence that points in the right direction, but not enough I guess? I kind of like Shakespeare remaining a mysterious so the lack of evidence is cool by me.

To be honest I had only seen some abstract images of his and was not that impressed. Will do some more homework.
