You enter the main exhibition hall of the gallery, really big space, all dark. The only source of light you have is a little flashlight with a black plastic film over, so it won't do anything good. Except giving you a false feeling of security.
As you walk longer into the total dark room, seven anti-theft alarms starting to sound in like... 130 db, triggered in activated by sensors.
I really liked it, the things you start to "see" in the dark. And as some other of Duncans work, you can either panic along with the group or go inside yourself to find peace.
thank you for jogging my memory on john duncan
aka, you'd love this guy.
he is a notorious figure in the la art scene
at the request of paul mccarthy
he came to speak to our class
he was dressed in total leather daddy outfit
he is an intense corpsefucker, someone from a different era
i dont remember much of what he said
only the audio maxwell tape he played which i can still hear
quite rustling in the background
like leaves brushing against the pavement
for an agonizingly long time
it went on
until
"blind date"
he fucked a cadaver
that he bought in mexico
and then later got a vasectomy
so that his last good seed would go to a corpse
he got run out of LA for this
a huge backlash
people thought he made it up
but it was real
his website presents a sanitized account
but that experience is at the top of the list
of shit i would have rather not seen/heard
One wonders where it will end, when everything has become gay.
he's sure done some sick shit, ringing on his friends door in the middle of the night dressed like a robber, only to fire a blank right at his friends head when he opened the door, then run away.
speaking of duncan, here's an absolute classic piece in the canon of sound art from an artist who has worked with him. didn't know this has been reissued 3 times. i still have the original (released on selektion) from way way back. phenomenal work. the most recent reissue has the piece remastered accordingly, it would seem. :)
a great deal to see as well... if you close your eyes.
The fluid dress video is here: http://vimeo.com/16871362 ------- This is a small prototype for a fluid dress that I showed at the 2009 Maker Faire in San Mateo. More…
Never seen anything like that before and was thoroughly entertained.
